Rolex "Grand Prix de Monaco"
Hello guys, dont really find something about these special watches here at the Forum.
It's not the same as the 24H Daytona or 24H Le Mans watches, given from Rolex to the winners, the "Grand Prix de Monaco" watches are, what I think, from a local dealer in Monaco given to Racing Drivers. Example: 1992 for the Monaco GP, the most exiting GP in Monaco ever, Senna vs. Mansell see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsqipJ2lSZs The were given 3 watches, Submariners in Gold, Bi Color and Steel. Not sure for what exactly, I would say fastest lap, Winner and Qualifying. Two were auctioned bevor, see: https://catalog.antiquorum.swiss/en/...13-350?page=18 https://www.phillips.com/detail/ROLEX/CH080117/126 Does someone knowes more about these unique watches? Pictures, Details? Lets see what's coming.... |

Catalogue Essay
The 1992 Grand Prix de Monaco is recognized as one of the most exciting Formula One races in history, as two of the most notorious drivers, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell, engaged in a breathtaking battle for victory. We believe this watch is one of a very limited batch of Submariners in stainless steel to have been made for this event along with another batch in gold and steel. Research shows that these were delivered to Rolex’s French agent and must have been given as gifts to the driver of the fastest lap and to the winner of the race. For the year 1992, the pole position was held by Nigel Mansell and the race won by Ayrton Senna. Marking the beginning of an era, Reference 16610 is Rolex’s first Submariner to use a sapphire crystal as well as the first model of the Submariner family to feature white gold applied luminous hour markers on a black, glossy dial. All parts of the present glossy black dial are in immaculate condition. This watch’s case is crisp with extremely well defined lugs. With its motorsport linkage, it's sure to be a great addition for the discerning collector. Which mean, its just a submariner. these auctions related to racing are well known for their liberal use of provenance exits. rolex had no FIA F1 relationship at the time and a sub is not a racing watch. its just a sub worth what a 16610 or 16613 is worth unless proven without question its a presented watch, and even then, not worth much more than retail. so, there you go. |

„Just a Submariner“ is good.
Note: Antiquorum sold the watch having belonged to Ayrton Senna for 36.000 SFr. Nice result for „just a Sub“ and this years ago. |

Anything that belonged to Ayrton is priceless...
The point is that nowhere it states what was given to whom. I'd love to have one of these. I guess it depends how much you care about Formula One...

Rolex collectors might have an interest despite it being a Sub if there is provenance. Formula One collectors, too. And in some corners, Senna fans would want it despite rising values.
All depends upon some reliable proof the driver was presented with the watch - then value increases if the driver became world-famous, and wore it, was pictured with it, and handed it over to someone in some significant way. Although PLN didn’t win his Daytona, his watch ticked all the other boxes to the tune of 15 millions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've been to the Monte Carlo Drivers Club auction several times. And bid, and won watches. There's many of these floating around, without provenance. |

Help needed, someone has a link to the Auction?
"Antiquorum sold the watch having belonged to Ayrton Senna" When was it and where? |

Found it - 16. March 2008
From the website: Other exceptional results include a Rolex that once belonged to the Formula One driver Ayrton Senna that sold for SRF. 36,000, four times its pre-sale estimate. Does someone has the catalogue? Would love to see a picture of the watch and the discription. |

Senna would never "buy" a Rolex while under contract. Or even be seen wearing one.
He was 100pct loyal to Tag Heuer (and every sponsor) after his Universal Genčve contract expired. Phillips or Christies would never allow this type description without absolute proof. Here's a good link. http://www.ayrton-senna-dasilva.com/...ennas-watches/ |

I agree with you that he never bought one, or better in special, this one. it was given to him in 1992 for the F1 GP. Would love to find and owne the watch :-)
In detail, when you look at the video of the race in 1992 Monaco, you see him with the winners trophy and wearing a TAG Heuer. |
