The Lost President
Hi, guys. Good to be back. I just had to share my unusual watch story with people who would “get it”. Yesterday, my daughter called me from TX. I am in NorCal now, for the past 6 years, having moved from my native NJ, after losing my husband, very suddenly, in 2014. Nothing unusual about hearing from Erica, except she started the conversation with, “ Hi, Ma. I just found your Rolex Day-Date that you left here. I replied, “What? I don’t have a Rolex Day-Date!” She said, “Mom, I found it in the bedside table, in one of your travel watch cases. It is definitely yours”. She described the case, and it definitely was mine. So, I asked her to describe this watch. She told me it was a silver colored 36 mm with a blue dial and had diamond hour markers. After grilling her, she went on to describe the bracelet and case markings, which were both stamped 18 k 750. The bracelet had a 4 on it and the correct model number for a President. After a few more pointed questions, it appears I had sized it for my wrist. Naturally, I was intrigued. I asked her, “is it running?” She described the sweeping of the second hand. At that point, I asked her to text me a close-up pic. Well, sure enough, it is a vintage Day-Date President in remarkable condition. It has a tritium dial, so I think, probably from the 80’s, or so. The reason this story is extraordinary is that I have absolutely no memory of having purchased or owned this watch. She is shipping it to me on Tuesday. The one thing I know is that it is exactly the color and style I would pick out for myself. After wracking my brain, I figured out the most plausible scenario. I must have purchased it shortly after my husband passed away. That 1st year I was in a sort of fog. It is the only explanation that makes any sense. Needless to say, I am very excited about this watch. It is a stunning piece. I will post pics when it arrives. How’s that for a crazy story?

Heh. I "think" your daughter is making a present to you.
So sorry about your hubby. I cannot think of much worse than losing a spouse.

He hadn’t visited Erica recently. I am at a loss to explain how I could forget about it. It had to have been quite expensive. Currently, they sell for at least $13,000.00, which is much more than I ever paid for a watch. I did have a thing for vintage classic Rolexes.

One more odd thing about the story. There was a green OEM Rolex sticker on the back with the wrong model number printed on it. If it had been THAT model, it would have been in my usual price range for a vintage Rolex. It was the only thing that seemed vaguely familiar to me. Weird!

Interesting story. Would love to see pics when you receive. Do you use the same AD? Maybe inquire with them? |

I don’t have a Rolex AD. Most likely, I bought it on EBay, but they don’t save the records. The sticker, though, makes me think I got it at a jewelry store. I bought several Of my vintage Omega’s from Mom and Pop Jewekers.

Kind of how I am looking at it. About 4 years ago, I lost my 16610. I was so upset, at the time. So, I am looking at this watch as payback. I am fairly certain I paid way less than what it should have cost, so in a way, it is a gift from the universe....

I should add that my daughter is as excited about this find as I am. The watch was in her possession for at least 5 years, probably 6. She is my only girl, so someday, it will be hers....

Thank you all for the condolences. As I mentioned, I think I was so out of it, after my husband passed, that I bought the watch, and promptly forgot about it. I remember indulging in a lot of retail therapy, at the time, but still don’t understand how I could have forgotten buying this watch. I am not sure if I ever actually wore it. I am in a very good place, now. After serial dating for a few years, I met a wonderful man on Christmas Day, 2018 and we are great together. The universe has a way of making things right again. He thinks my watch obsession is silly, but that’s O.K.

Hmm, I am pretty sure that was mine... I can identify it... it has a round face, 3 hands, says Rolex on it.... Has a day display above where the 12 should be. You can mail it back to me.
Congrats, on the surprise and sorry about your husband.

I could tell from the pics it was genuine. Naturally, I will confirm that upon receipt, by removing the bracelet and checking the serial number. I have seen detailed pics of all the markings, caseback, dial, etc. It is the real deal. I do think the seller was unaware of what they had, because I know I wouldn’t have paid more than $4,ooo.oo for any watch. I had Erica weigh it and it was over 120 grams, which is what a 36 mm President should weigh. Thanks for your concern, though.
