How about "thanks are you a watch enthusiast/hobbyist?" and then a friendly conversation ensues and a everyone leaves with good vibes. I don't get the issue.

Young people these days have no filter or have a lack of tact. I chalk it up to less human interaction and too much screen time as the cause.

Meanwhile people of certain generations complain that the younger generations aren’t social and don’t know how to talk to people. (Maybe because the older generations think they aren’t worth talking to or worried they’re going to be robbed when they do try to socialize about shared interests?)

One of the most wholesome watch interactions I’ve had happened with a complete stranger. Delayed flight at MCO and a young kid, probably 19 or 20, wearing a PRX commented on my watch. He said “That’s my dream watch” then he went on to tell me about how he got started and why he chose the PRX.

I handed him the Explorer and had him try it on. Kid was stoked! I’m certain he will join TRF one day and post his very own incoming.

This was in the secure passenger area of an airport and I am not sure if I’d hand my watch to anyone under different circumstances.

I do not mind others noticing my watches and commenting on them, but when they comment in a situation when others can hear them and groups of people notice it can be uncomfortable. When that has happened I've told them it was fake. In my opinion, it is a break of decorum. 1:1 I have no problem. A guy yelling across the room is uncouth!

How many people do you think are actually listening to anything else except their podcast or the music in the their earbuds or the person/persons across the table?

Is Rolex like a buzz word for people in nice restaurants or something?

The part where you have to feel em out is when you ask to take a picture of the watches together. Never been turned down though.

All 6 of my previous posts are quoted in this one. Including your latest.

I believe once you’ve re-read them you’ll see there was zero bad intentions on my part. I also did not provide any “advice”, I merely stated how I deal with your scenario whether I’m on the giving or receiving end of the compliment.

Best of luck on your Rolex journey.

Last summer on a Sat morning in a supermarket, at a grocery corner in front of tomatoes, I was approached by a tall and well built man asking what kind of watch I wore. Startled, for a moment I couldn’t utter a word, yet remind myself what I was wearing.

It soon turned out that he has precisely same model (Exp I) and was simply trying to check what’s so nice on my wrist. Moreover, we quickly established that we are active members of the same Polish watch forum. We instantaneously greeted ourselves with our nicknames.

I was a funny and entertaining meet up. Actually the first ever when someone asked about my watch.

We cultivate a small tradition since then - whenever one of us is in the same place, we sent each other „cheers” photos with tomatoes in background.

Regardless, I would have laughed it off, said thank you and moved on. Not a big deal imo.

In over 50 years of owning and wearing Rolex you could count on one hand the amount of times anyone made a comment on the watch I was wearing. But today some Rolex owners love to make mountains out of molehills, then perhaps to post it on watch forums

Well said.

I remember years ago when we celebrated success, shared our joy with others, and as a result meeting new enthusiasts of horology was welcome. If anything, we did wish there were more young people decades ago, and thankfully, that has been fulfilled recently.

I get it. There’s a vibe and tone that people give off in their interactions that are off putting that’s hard to put into words here. Your OP sounds like this was one of those.
