Daytona – Full Circle: The Evolution Over 4 Decades
There’s something poetic about the Rolex Daytona’s journey over the last almost four decades. If you compare the new 126500LN with the iconic 16520 from 1988, the similarities are uncanny. Sure, we have the addition of the ceramic bezel now, but when you look at the dial configuration, sub-dials, hour markers, overall layout, and aesthetics, it feels like Rolex has come full circle.
1. Rolex Daytona Reference 16520 (1988–2000) 2. Rolex Daytona Reference 116520 (2000–2016) 3. Rolex Daytona Reference 116500LN (2016–2023) 4. Rolex Daytona Reference 126500LN (2023–Present) I've always felt that Rolex knocked it out of the park aesthetically with the original Zenith-powered 16520 Daytona. There’s something timeless about that design, and it was a game changer in its day. One interesting thing, though, is how preferences have flipped over time. Back in the Zenith era, the black dial was clearly the more popular choice. But when the 116500LN came out in 2016 with the ceramic bezel, suddenly the white dial—what people started calling the "Panda"—became the dial everyone wanted. Now, with the introduction of the 126500LN, the dial design has shifted back toward that classic Zenith look. And what do we see? A lot of collectors seem to be gravitating toward the black dial again, just like in the late '80s and '90s. I’ve been keeping an eye on opinions, and it’s interesting how these trends play out. Does anyone else think the 126500LN is a gorgeous new take on the Daytona? It feels like a perfect evolution of a design that’s always been beloved, but with just enough modern touches to make it feel fresh. The Daytona has always been about subtlety and refinement, and this newest reference keeps that spirit alive while nodding respectfully to its 1980’s aesthetic roots.

They all look great but I'll take the 16520 for the win.

The 126500 looks like the most perfected one of the bunch.

Like all of them…. Any serious collection would have one of each era in white and black!

I agree with you and have two zenith. I also want a 12 series due to the clear aesthetic similarities with the zenith. I have just unloaded both my 11 series in preparation

Rolex is also leaning more toward the late 70’s early 80’s 6263/6265 design now with their precious metal offerings

I love them all. The 116500 “Panda”, good, bad, or indifferent, is an important reference and will go down as its own legend. Hype era alongside 5711 and 15202.

The modern Daytona evolution photo was great.
I noted a marked difference in the thickness of the dark ring for subdials. I like the thinner rings for the subdials. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Me too but that’s why this new 12 series is so irresistible to us aficionados. It truly embodies a modern take on the zenith in my view and renders the two in between, well, irrelevant. I just unloaded both my 11 series and I blame Rolex 100% Lol

I agree that the photo clearly demonstrates the family lineage straight back to the zenith while missing all the heavy-set design cues from those two in between. As another poster mentioned, the metal bezel also brings back the 4 digit design. To my eyes the 12 series is a perfect blend of all that was good over the +4 decades and none of the design misses.

Very true, I hadn’t thought of that. It will, as you say, always remind us of the “crazy era” of 4 x retail that just couldn’t be sustainable

I’ve had a 16520 white, 116520 both dials, and my current black 116500.
I don’t dislike the 126500 but its changes do not compel me to seek one either. |

Thanks for contributing to the thread. That’s spectacular and explains why they’re so aesthetically pleasing

I’m a little surprised that no one mentioned the relatively bulky crown/pushers compared to the thinned out subdials in the 12 series...unless it’s just my perception. This is the one aesthetic feature I haven’t adjusted to yet, but it’s a minor point compared to the other updates.

Personally, I like the dials being pushed up on the dial. It makes for less open space at the top. Then again, I’m sure if Rolex had the style of the Zenith era today, they’d find a way to add a couple more lines of text. Truth be told, I’d be happy with any of them. You know how indecisive I am with watches. |

This is one of those rare instances where we don’t see eye to eye lol. The sub dials or perhaps the markers just visually don’t look as pleasing to my eye as they do on the Zenith … but to each their own as they say I have NO idea what your indecisive about my friend Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
