Anyone know why rolex use the '28' in their SD date shots?

Hi guys, as the title suggests, is there any trivia behind this, or is it simply because it was deemed to 'look good' in the date window on the sea dweller product shots? (see my sig as an example, and many more pics on the Internet - I am on my iPhone at the mo so unable to post them)

is the number 28 used on any other models? If not, is there any pattern/relevance behind it?

Has the number 28 always been used on the sea dweller shots going back to it's launch?

I am intrigued to discover why, if any of you guys know, and if not, perhaps I had ought to be sectioned under the WIS act!!

Hi, it isn't just the SD that has the date 28, Rolex uses 28 for all its promotional shots. There are many possible reasons, one being that "28'' in Cantonese sounds like "good luck'' which makes it a lucky number to Asians, but my preferred explanation is that 28 is a "perfect number'' - see thread below...

Incidentally, there are other threads on this topic as well..

As far as I know 28 is used for models with a date function.

Good question. I think it's because it fills the date window nicely with lots of curves.

For instance 1 would be an extremely boring date to show.

That was what I heard also; Omega has the date 8 on all all its model shots, and Panerai also use 28. In Cantonese 8 sound like "FAR", means "rich" or "making a lot money"...

It makes sense to me and I believe it is definitely one of the reasons. In Chinese 8 means "riches" and 2 means "easy". So 28 means "easy to be rich". Thinking about Rolex changed the area code from 400 to 888 for Hong Kong (note: 4 means "died" in Chinese) and use 828 for Mainland China, I'm quite sure that Rolex will take this as a concern.

Very interesting,

I always thought it was just coincidence they were all photographed at 10:10:31 on the 28th.

Correct, it is simply the most "ink" of all the dates
