DateJust vs Explorer

1972 1601 DateJust w/ white gold fluted bezel, sigma pie-pan dial and original jubilee bracelet

vs

1985 5500 Explorer with nicely aged tritium-coated Arabic numerals and baton indexes and baton hands

More correctly this should be datejust or air-king. Some air-kings came with a sought after 3,6,9 dial but the vast majority with this dial have had them added to increase the value. I’d stick with a good 1016 Explorer instead of a dubious 5500 with 3,6,9 dial.

Definitely the 5500 explorer assume that the 5500 is original. The 5500 still has beautiful dial despite at 34mm size.

DJ 1601 is a classic reference and much easier to determine if it’s all original. Besides 36 mm size wears better too

The 5500 is an AirKing NOT and Explorer. Although the 3-6-9 dial on some is often referred to as the “rare Explorer dial” there are so many of them on EBay I tend to think it wasn’t that rare at all.

In a thread from a few years ago Haywood Milton linked to this article showing his 3 5500 pieces. Two are black dialed 5500 “ Explorer”

The 5500 was made over several decades, mostly in AirKing Precision form but also and quite certainly in Explorer Precision form.

.

Right. But they say Explorer on the dial. Those were earmarked for the Euro market. Other Air Kings with a 3-6-9 dial but without “Explorer” are Air Kings.
