Silica pack in watch box

Is it beneficial to put a silica pack in a watch storage box? Cant recall the brand, but mine has a glazed wood experior, and can hold about 10 watches, so not a huge storage box. Ive kept the silica pack it came with in there although it said "throw away." Ive had the box since roughly the end of 2012. Took the silica pack out today, figuring I should probably change it. Does it make a difference to have this in there? This box is where I store my 5500 AK when its not worn as well as a few other pieces. Thanks all!

Depends on your atmosphere. They are generally for transport. There are also arguments both for and against since they can actually draw moisture out of the atmosphere and into the box. Boomstick forums are full of threads on this. Personally I'd throw it.

Here in Hawaii it’s pretty humid but my watches in their box have never been affected by humidity.
I do keep those silica packs in my firearms cases and it definitely helps those because before I did that I would start to see corrosion. But I’m guessing watches can hold up against humidity better than firearms.

Do you have a mold or mildew issue where you are at?

The pack is there to keep the box environment stable while it is undergoing dramatic changes during shipping.

Silica pack in watch box

Once the container is put into service, the shipping silica pack is fairly useless. As Larry said, mostly for shipping and storage of an unopened box (because it is fairly airtight in its packaging).

But a Watchbox put into service is going to be opened on a regular basis. It’s also not airtight where condensing humidity could play havoc.

But if you want one for yours, consider those that are sized properly for the size of your box. Those that work in safes are quite a bit larger than the ones used in shipment.

I've tossed the little silica packet, but I do keep a "rechargeable" silica box in our safe and near the watch box. Does it help? I don't know, but it gives me some peace of mind.

I would say keep the packet out of reach of children. If you worry about humidity, I would try to change/regulate my A/C and or get those bags for closets. Not all boxes are created equal, depending on the environment, they will start deteriorate at some point (Breitling in my case).

The box is stored on a bedroom night stand, so no massive humidity where it is.
