I love my GS Snowflake.
But I love most of my Rolexes more :) Despite the Snowflake being technically better in most respects. |

It might be 'Grand' but its still a Seiko and a Rolex is a Rolex.
I'll say no more.... |

As someone who's been wearing Rolex watches for a while and recently added a GS to my collection, I don't agree that one is better than the other. Each brand has its strengths and the feeling I get when wearing my SD4K vs SBGA415 is uniquely different based on look & feel, materials, movement/technology, history etc. I love the overall robustness & utilitarian aspects of Rolex, while I admire the attention to detail & beautiful dials of GS.
It's nice to own both and appreciate their differences.

No thanks. All hype and really nothing that even looks that great. There are about 10 other brands and 100 other watches to buy before one of these.

Good job ruining the perception of Scottish people as not being pretentious

Indeed
My SD has a crown and six lines of text on the dial. 7 if you include the “Swiss made” at the bottom. All that’s missing is “Hey. Look at me”

I like Rolex as a tool watch. Their sports lines are second to none; they are timeless and feel like they are indestructible. I’d take a sub over the GS divers or the gmt master over GS’s GMT. However, for horological innovation and dial artistry, GS takes the cake.
In short, each has its own qualities to offer, as they fill different needs for a watch collector.

Made a trip to the GS boutique to look at and consider the Skyflake.
I’m not ready for GS yet. Will stick with Rolex even if I can’t find one.

Grand Seiko is not Rolex and that is the point.

There is no arguing the contents of the video, perhaps he should have picked a GS with a spring drive 9R15 movement which would have been even more convincing

All the nice intricate finishing details on the dial, hour markers and hands are lost on me. You need a loupe to appreciate them and I don't carry one with me everywhere I go. At an arm's length most GS classic watches look like a generic Seiko to me, unfortunately. I can't shake it off unless I look at macro shots, but that's not what I see in real life with a naked eye.
I'd rather have something that looks great most of the time and fine up close, than something that looks just ok most of the time and beautiful up close under a loupe, if that makes sense. Give me eagle eyes and I might change my mind. As for spring drive I have zero interest. I don't see the point of paying over the odds for a glorified Kinetic movement. In the end it's a quartz oscillator controlling the timing, not an escapement with pallet and fork. Calling it quartz is fine, calling it mechanical is lying or cheating IMHO. |

We must distinguish between the watch aficionados here on TRF or another watch website, and those in the general public that are shopping for a watch. For the average person with $6,000, $7,000 or more to spend on a watch, Seiko isn't on their short list. For us, it may be, but for the average person, no.

Since this IS a Rolex forum, a Seiko (even if it's Grand) can only be a secondary watch. Just being honest. But what a secondary watch it is!
Cheers!

Nice video!!! Nice watches but they don't have me chaffing at the bit to get my next one; for at least the present two is enough for me.

A couple of things ....
Can guys stop saying a "Grand Seiko" is still a "Seiko?" It's not. That's like saying a Lexus is a Toyota. It ain't. Also, Grand Seiko is not "better" than Rolex, whatever "better" means. It's just different, and that in itself is the appeal. I've owned Rolexes since the early 1980s, and still have a lot of them, including some (now) crazy valuable vintage references. They're beautiful. However, I still love some Grand Seiko watches BECAUSE they're not a Rolex, which is often very conservative as a brand and, gasp, boring. (And let's not get started on the tiresome Rolex nonsense that includes a shocking lack of stock at ADs of even basic SS models like DJs and Subs.) In addition, GS watches just have such impeccable hand-finishing and interesting cases and dials, super cool vintage-inspired designs that often hark back to their original designs from the '60s, and interesting innovations when it comes to movements. And I love the Japanese aesthetic and craftsmanship on top of everything else. They're just cool. |

Quite honestly I’ve had every Rolex sport model vintage and/or new...tired of the attitudes, “value” “investment” etc discussions...and games and bragging...I have a deposit on a new speedmaster hesalite and now eying seiko...I’ve had some new and vintage seiko but I’m thinking a spring drive gmt or SPB 183 as I love blue.

Both brands make amazing time pieces. After lusting over a 124270 Explorer decided to pull the trigger on an SBGA203. Comparable time pieces, but fell in love with GS attention to detail. Found myself staring at the dial under a loop on many occasions.
