I have purchased a few preowned watches this year, a DJ (about 10 years old), and a JLC (about 5 years old).

Both watches are running a little fast (about a minute every two days). Should I send them in for service or is there a less major way get this fixed? I am reluctant to not have these watches for one to two months which seem to be the time estimates for service.

Should I check if there is a magnetism issue (or anything else) with a local jeweler before sending them in to their official service centers?

If it is only a timing issue, any mechanical watch can be regulated to run differently.

Every time a watch gains or loses time doesn't mean it needs a service.

If it happened suddenly, I wouldn't expect it to be a regulation issue, I'd suspect magnetism as a first step. Even if not, magnetism is a trivial thing to fix.

If you can use an app on your cell phone (a compass alone does it, but there are apps specifically to test phones), you can detect the worst levels of magnetism, but picking up a cheap demagnetizer and running it on the watch a few times is at worst, harmless.

It could be that the hairsprings in both watches are magnetized causing them to stick, lowering the amplitude and thus causing them to run fast. I'd degauss them before doing anything else. Demagnetizers are cheap on Amazon.

It happened to my 16710 GMT II; I wore it while holding my laptop for hours with the watch next to the left speaker. Degaussing was a quick and easy fix.

I think they are all pretty much the same little blue box for about £10-£15 on Amazon. Just search “watch demagnetiser”.
