I would take the 6 digit over the 5 digit as I don't like the small plots on the dial of the 5- just feels like something missing.
I would take a 1680 over both! (In fact I did!)

Much prefer the maxi dial, so id have to go 126610. Maybe get a 16610LV w/ maxi dial and source an extra black bezel. 2 watches in one!

I'd freak out using a knife on the LV, only to make it look like a not-quite-right LN.

So many good opinions on both sides, and the count on picking 5digit vs. 6digit is close to even! (of course it is, haha)

These are the key points I see in the thread:

1) My wrist works with 40mm or 41mm
2) I can't go wrong
3) Wario406 showed me a 6-digit can be a strap monster

Thanks all!

It all depends on what else you have in your collection but modern Sub will have my vote.

Personally I only like 4 digits or 6 digits sub/gmt, we’ve seen many cracked dial in 5 digits, it makes me worry about the quality of those transitional models, just my personal opinion

Agree, not even close as a contest
Old bracelet and clasp are just awful imo

I’ve owned the 16610 theee times and the 16610LV twice. I love the 5 digit models. They have so much charm. I love the sound of the bracelet rattle. The 16610LV is one of my all time favorite models. Old style case, maxi dial.

I’ve had a 126610 since May. I’d choose it every time over a 5 digit Sub. Maxi dial and hands, AR crystal, the bezel is easier to grip for me. Add the Glidelock and it’s a winner. The only 5 digit Submariner I’d own again is an LV. The hour markers are too small on an LN for me.

Modern for your first luxury watch, you can add vintage later down the line.

And also glidelock.

I vote new ceramic. And not even close.
But a classic sub is an absolute icon and I wouldn’t fault you for having one in your collection.

16610

The charm and personality of the old 1680s and later 16610s win out against the ceramicists in my opinion.

Another vote for the 16610 from me. I like the dimensions of the older model better than the newer one, and feel the 16610 looks better on your wrist (and the same would go for my own wrist).

My 2017 seamaster has ceramic bezels and AR. It's not unique to Rolex, if anything they were late to the party.

Purchase advice - submariner 16610 vs 126610

If torn between those 2 and want a 20mm band why not get the 116610 LN. you will be priced in between the 2 and have a tried and true movement with a ceramic bezel and the best clasp in the business. The glide lock.

To me it's a no-brainer: Get the new one

- Quite possibly the 'perfect Rolex' for men
- Excellent power reserve
- Incredible accuracy (*)
- Warranty
- Great proportions

(*) At least IME, all my modern movements are +/- 1s/day
