Time Keeping & Cycling

After a 10 year hiatus I have returned to Rolex and the 'sickness' that is buying watches. I have worn my 126610LV aka Starbucks for a month now, only removing it to shower. The watch keeps perfect time.

I am a keen road cyclist and regularly spend 5 hours in the saddle avoiding the potholes in the UK. I have found that over that period of time the watch looses 2 seconds, it's position being 12 o'clock down. This is easily compensated for by placing the watch 'Dial Up' overnight where it gains 2 seconds and back to perfect time. Unbelievable!

Just wanted to share.

I do a lot of road cycling but never wear a watch whilst doing so. It just seems an unnecessary risk to damaging it in a crash or fall when I have the time and any timing information shown on my Garmin Computer on the handlebars. Each to their own though I suppose.

I'm with you. I do wear a watch when I cycle, but it's a Garmin that I use for my triathlons and training. I once wore a mechanical watch while cycling. Never again. Way too much risk with zero reward. I suppose if you use a bicycle for commuting, then carrying a watch with you makes some sense. In that case, I would not wear the watch on my wrist until I was off the bike.

I wear my Rolex watches riding my mountainbike almost daily, it does not affect the timekeeping on any of them.

I stopped wearing mechanical watches on bikes. Years ago, I fell on some wet slick pavement and hit my watch on the road surface. Probably protected my wrist but the fall really messed my bark finish YG PM DateJust. Rolex repaired it but was never perfectly symmetrical after that.

I wear my Explorer when mountain bike with my son (leisurely pace). Only wear my “Road ID” bracelet when on my road bike. Gotta keep aero!

I wear a garmin, although I’ll occasionally wear my Assos Tudor Pro Cycling jersey!

Your watch will survive your ride better than your testicles. Wear it and enjoy.

I originally posted to highlight the timekeeping disparity. I think the hoods on a road bike angle the watch down whereas on a flat bar bike it is less so.

I wear my Rolex on the bike because the rides take 7 hours with lunch etc 3x a week so it's a significant amount of time and I like wearing the watch.

Thanks for the comments and photos

For a casual ride on my mt. bike, I'll wear a mechanical watch with no worries. For a 5-6 hour ride on my road bike...never. I wear an old Polar. Got into a crash in 2000, woke up in the hospital.

Between the crash and the hospital bed, somebody is going to take that watch off your wrist. Hopefully it's an honest person.

Cycling is one endeavor I use my phone instead of a watch.

There was no waitlist for testicles and they are self healing. Mine are 45 years old and often come cycling with me. I’ve never had to send them off for a service or polish.

When I am lazy, I wear my Explorer I under a long sleeve jersey, otherwise I use my Garmin GPS for the time.

I did break a DateJust 30 years ago when a car pulled out and Supermaned it over the hood. The DateJust was in my jersey pocket. It returned good as new two months later from the RSC.

If Rolex had lighter models (titanium with Oysterflex) I’d consider wearing them while cycling (9,500 miles in 2023), otherwise they are too big and heavy especially in the cycling world.

I realized this wearing my 116600 during a cycling event (SeaOtter, Monterey) and it was obvious that it didn’t belong.
