Promiscuity is a good thing, in the watch world at least .

After years of wearing mostly Rolex, I'm thinking of adding a TAG Carrera Chrono, one of their latest Glassbox re-issue.

Unless you’re buying your watches as a pure status symbol, then monetary value has very little to do with it. I think it’s more of your personal style and designs that speak to you the most regardless of price point. I can get just as excited of wearing a $6k watch as I do a $40k watch. Then there is $100k watches that do nothing for me because their designs leave me flat.

The biggest rookie mistake of watch collecting long term is thinking the more serious you are about your watch collection, the more money you must be spending on each piece. That is ridiculous and more social media flexing than anything.

Sure, as we start out Rolex is an aspirational brand, but as you’re discovering, there are some really great brands, many great brands and models, actually. I’ve had my share of Rolex’s, doubt I’ll get another, but I’m sure not finished collecting.
And Omega is one of my favorite brands, as is GS, and the Seiko line.

As others have said, buy and wear what you like. Don’t let the brand name on it dictate what you do. This is one of my most recent acquisitions and it gets a lot of wrist time.

I agree with this. Rolex is boring. That is part of the appeal (constant designs for decades) and the turn-off. I think I will always have Rolex in my collection, but I have branched out to what others consider "lesser" brands which I really enjoy and I'm okay with that.

Going backwards?

You can have your cake and eat it too. I’m equally interested in Rolex and other brands.

I have a couple Omegas. Plus, I’m interested in acquiring watches from Nomos, Farer, and Damasko.

But I also want a couple more Rolex models. So I guess I’m somewhere in the middle.

Enjoy a bit of everything. Buy what you like and will likely wear. With the thousands of watches that are out there, there is bound to be a lot that will catch your eye. Go in any direction you want.

I like to think of it like our diet.

If you grow your own vegetables and raise your own meat, then pretty much anything you eat outside your home is a step backwards.

But I think most of us would like to have a cheeseburger and pizza and ice cream every now and then.

So you can have your Rolexes and a BB and a Speedmaster and a vintage... it's balanced and doesn't mean your Rolexes are devalued or not your main watches anymore.

There's a tongue-in-cheek graph out there somewhere of watch collecting over time, and "Rolex only" is somewhere around the mid-point of the "journey" if I recall. As I say, all very tongue-in-cheek and stereotyping, but also with more than a kernel of truth to it for a lot of people.

There's a whole world of watches out there, and while I love my Rolexes and other "expensive" pieces, I also have plenty of diversity including ultra-cheap stuff as well. A watch of mine that gets worn quite a lot is my Casio MRW-200H-1BVES - a military-style, analogue, resin, non-G-Shock piece that cost me a whopping £19.99!

At the end of the day, I just like watches.

I don't really see it as going backwards...more like expanding your horizons.

Honestly, if I'm taking a day to go look at watches, I'll probably spend more time at the Tudor counter than Rolex for...well, obvious reasons. Like there aren't any watches at one of them.

Thanks for the reassurance. Thought I was going crazy researching, learning, and trying on Tudors..... I really like these a lot. Soon I'd like to add another Tudor to my new Ranger.

I think the biggest success for Rolex is their advertising and marketing. Sure, they're nice watches, but many brands have something nice to offer. I also have Omega, Tudor, Oris, Seiko, Citizen and last but certainly not least, G-Shock and derive pleasure from them all. Keep your mind open and enjoy they journey. Cheers!

So, to summarize thus far, it appears you need a Seiko and a puppy. That should set you straight

So much truth to that after you acquire a few.

This weekend went to the local Tudor AD and tried on a bunch of watches. Pelagos FXD, Black Bay 925, Black Bay 41, BiMetal GMT, and a few others. Went across the street to the Omega AD and tried on a couple watches there too.

So I believe most people look at these brands before the graduate to Rolex. Seems like I am going backwards.... maybe I am broken. Not sure if this is normal.....

Anyone else?
OP I'm in the same boat. I have slowed way down and would consider another Rolex, but which is the question. In the meantime I've gathered 6 Tudors, 3 Moonwatches, a PAM, and Casio. As well as fixed some of the watches from my youth, 20's, 30's, 40's - that was super satisfying

Rolex or nothing? Now this is a going backwards watch collecting strategy.

True watch geeks get the same pleasure out of owning and enjoying a watch they like, no matter if it costs £50 or £50,000.

Omega makes great watches — I really enjoy mine and my first nice watch was an Omega as well.

Tudors I’d pass on though

Agreed.
SKX is so very hard to go past
It took me years to get one and it didn't disappoint.
I have always had a Seiko since the mid 70's.

My yourney started with a Mickey mouse watch, then onto some other manual winder when i was a little fella.
Seiko has always been a part of my watch history with a good many Rolex which was focused on 4 and 5 digit EXP II s and those Rolex watches are all history now that i have settled on two 116660s.
I have occassionally had and will always have Omega with 2 permanent residents in the collection and will definately add another at some point and they don't in the slightest disapoint either and slightly better value than Rolex. IMO.
A GS that i have is magnificent.
The only disapointments were Swatch watches back in the day but they were legacies of being coupled up to a wonderful girl.

Diversity of anything that you enjoy is the goal

Also interested in G shock at some point.
Thanks to everybody who posted pics of theirs.
It's inspirational

You miss out on too much in the watch world to think that way for me. I rock my Casio as much as I do my Speedmaster, Rolex or Navitimer. 🤷*♂️

I own everything from little known microbrands to G shocks, Seikos , Hamiltons Omegas, etc. I buy what appeals to me aesthetically, brand name be damned. I love watches. There is absolutely nothing wrong with diversification. Buy what you like.
