Is my Panerai Real or Fake?
I used to work for a very wealthy family about 2 years ago and after the bosses son found out i was into watches we took off his Panerai and gave it to me. Ive had it ever since and just want to make sure it is in fact a genuine Panerai. Your honest opinions would be much appreciated.
He never gave me the box and paper work and i was too embarrassed to call and ask for it as i might sound ungrateful. Please see the images attached. you will notice the crown protector isnt there. Its because i took it off to get the watch polished. |

the strange thing is there is no case number or serial number on the case back which would at least give the watch some identity.

my bad... i didn't read the last sentence you wrote.... but the proportion of the seconds hand and the dial is off ... the lack of serial number in the back, and the movement is very different that what I've seen so far in Panerai....so probably expert ristis can chime in here...

I have never seen the second hand placed like that on a PAM, and please correct me if I'm wrong here (if this was perhaps common on older models), but why wouldn't there be a cyclops magnifier over the date window?
Cheers, Joe

Sorry but I put my vote in that it is fake. That dial represents nothing from Pre-V to any other models and without a serial number or case numberthat is the closer for me.

If it was vintage it would have been Tritium on the dial and hands instead of Luminova. Too many questionable features that are unlike a typical Panerai watch.
Best way is to bring the watch to a Panerai service center and all doubts will be cleared.

I'm guessing fake. The seconds hand is extremely close to the center of the watch...

Yes that was part of what did it for me and the date looks so small and not typical of Panerai either. It seems as those 2 were done as an after thought on a dial that was already made.

I have never seen a PAM like that. It certainly isn't part of the modern line up and I haven't seen anything similar to it in Volcker's book. I would say that it is a fake but if you want peace of mind take it to Richemont Service on Castlereagh st.

It is definately a fake and an extremely poor fake at that! I find most people who post the "fake or real" question already know its fake but want to know how obvious it is!

My first thoughts screamed "nastiest piece of crap ever".
Then I thought "what if this is an older version" and is genuine? Then I thought "if this piece of crap was actually turned out Pre V then I'm bashing it regardless". Then I had a cup of tea and a nice biscuit. Then I wrote this. Thank you.

It looks like a fake to me sorry. Just too many things look wrong (and I'm not even a PAM owner yet) The back of the case also looks like the metal has become pitted or something, like it's oxidized. I had that happen to a cheap Lorus diver I had in college. But look on the bright side, at least you didn't pay for it

What's the expression? Always look a gift horse in the mouth? No such thing as a free lunch? Nothing in life is free?
As far as I know all PAMs use ETA (6497 or 7750 based), Coltebert (made for Rolex) or inhouse movements. NOT what appears to be a modified chinese ST6D automatic movement (a decent movement by the way). FYI, your applique/sticker on the rotor is skewed. Bottom line... save and get the real deal. You can always use that watch as a practice movement if you ever decide to get into watchmaking/repair. |
