Icon10 Rolex Testamonials

Rolex in the U.K. printed 2 separate books with unsolicited testamonials:
1. "The Rolex Letters" printed around the mid 1980's for the USA;
2. "Every Rolex Tells a Story" printed in the early 1990's for the English speaking world.

One story entitled (in the first book) "Trial by 100 motorcycles" states as follows:

"The Chronometer....was torn off by wrist when I fell in a motorcycle race in the Majove Desert. The next day I returned to the spot where the fall had occurred and retrieved the watch - slightly battered after some 100 motorcycles rolling over it, but still running." - R.L. Wright, Ridgecrest, California. Letter dated 16 July 1976.

Cool story, but I wouldn't want to test my luck with my Milgauss, then again I've ridden my motorbike many times without giving it a second thought. I'm guessing the Mojave desert has soft sand that cushioned the 100 motorbikes going over the top of it.

Hello Lol-x and welcome to TRF. You could be right about the sand absorbing a lot of the pressure and shock received by the watch.

Hi, and welcome! Wow, a Milgauss. Very rare indeed. Mmm, Lol-X, is this Chinese for Rolex? (Pardon the pun, I'm crazy).

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome.

Lol-x is how some people pronounce "Rolex" and I love hearing it said that way and it gives me LOL .

The Milgauss is by the serial number made in or about 1969. I've taken off the original silver dial and hands (to replace at a later time if I wish) and put in a modern (luminova) black dial and hands. Note the new style hands have a frosted aluminium appearance and a very retro style.

Fortunately, I've got the papers for the watch that indicate it was bought in Sydney, Australia from an authorised dealer.

I got the watch several years ago and wear it occasionally, but the lack of a date is a drawback. Its great to wear because no one knows what it is and it just flies under the radar.

I find that I need to change to another watch after wearing it for a week or two. However, this makes it feel fresh when I come around to wearing it again. I guess any watch can feel a little ordinary after a while if it's worn every day.

Regards

What a nice Rolex... I've just looked up your model on the net. How long have you had it? What would a piece like that cost on average? I know it's a rare peiece as I could'nt even find one on Ebay!

As I said I've had the watch several years.(3)

I don't know the exact price of these, but maybe US$20,000+

It is a ref: 1019 and was made until the late 1980's.

Hope this helps.
