Deflation announced in UK

Just this last weekend the news channels and newspapers tell us we are in Deflation in the UK 'the first time in 55years'. Reading a recent thread, rather quickly locked, about an OP (not in UK) who tried on a SkyD but decided not to drop $40k on it, is it that Deflation is more around the world rather than just in the UK? If the SkyD became available in stainless steel at a price similar to the s/s YachtMaster11, would forum members be more inclined to add this watch to their collection?

If you're referring to this thread, that was me and my decision not to buy had nothing to do with deflation.

For myself, I haven't reached a point in my watch interest to plunk down 5 figures for a watch.

I don't suspect that Rolex will ever offer a SkyD to the hoi polloi by way of a stainless version.

What does one have to do with the other? Maybe that person just didn't want to spend loads of money on a watch at that point. It probably has nothing to do with the fact that prices fell 0.1% in the UK.

come on guys - this is just headlines. This deflation was caused by low oil prices which have now crept up - I doubt the UK will be in deflation for much longer. A short term anomaly that will have little to no long term impact. That said - the economy will remain tepid and I would not expect any drastic inflation / interest rate rises until the middle of next year.

All the above has no relevance for watch buying!!

Other threads move quickly on this site, but even in the last few days another thread 'Watch collection in 1 photo only' at reply 23 shows a window display of Rolex and on several displayed watches stickers can be seen offering 20% off. Now I have never seen anything like this before. Another thread (19 May 15) asks 'Who else views a Rolex as a different form of currency?' It all makes the forum an interesting read!

That 20 percent off is probably the Rolex vintage boutique in Burlington Arcade. They always have these 'so called' discounts. Unfortunately there are people that fall for it.

How can 'hoi polloi' apply to those who might be in the market to buy a SkyD in stainless, when the price of such would surely be in the range of the s/s YM11 launched at £12,500 (about $18k). 'Hoi polloi' sounds to me the expression that would be scripted for Higgins to say in Magnum p.I.

Inflation, Deflation, Interest rates down, Stockmarket up - I used to think I knew something about economics. The older I get the more I realise there aren't too many rules - only what you see happening. You can make decisions for all the right reasons and get slaughtered and then luck into something you never saw coming (and then act like you made it happen)

What you see happening is exactly what my thread highlights;- of the moment picture of a shop window and 20% off stickers in one thread and another thread posing the question about watches and currency.

Grady made a good point. Rolex is not aiming the Sky Dweller at "the masses", i.e, the rest of us.
IMHO, it will stay in precious metal much like the DD. That will keep it in the price range you currently see relative to the SS models in the Professional line.
Deflation would not trigger Rolex to change its pricing - but some ADs who may want to free up some cash in the short term might offer better discounting.

Is anyone else preparing for Bondzilla this fall? Massive rise in bond yields and big hit to the stock market? All commodities will take a hit as well (gold and oil). In the oil patch, while the price of oil has ticked up, we are all still battening down the hatches and getting ready for increased volatility below $75 for at least next 12 months.

Let's assume this fall the wheels fall off the US economy. What happened to the value of Rolexs during the 2008/2009 Crisis which this might echo?

Yes and I think it was my shot of Burlington Arcade in London.

That place has continually had 20% off tags for as long as I've been going there for a browse.....but even with 20% off, they are still 20% more expensive than anywhere else.....their target market appears to be wealthy tourists buying birthdate watches for a spur of the moment holiday present ....

But a great place to try on unusual pieces before tracking them down on TRF or VRF or via a trusted seller.......

They had a bright yellow stella dial day date in there recently priced at only £95,000......

The point about the possibility of the SkyD being available in s/s is raised because with the high price of precious metals during a time of deflation, the watch in s/s might then becoming available at a price similar to the s/s Yacht Master11 Regatta, allowing more of us to consider purchase. I don't see that buying a watch in gold is any form of 'currency'.

This deflation is crazy, everything is so cheap now. Today I went to the AD and it took a while but eventually they convinced me that them paying me to take away a new Day Date was a good deal. I wasn't so sure. It will be worth even less tomorrow and if I want to "sell" it i'll probably have to pay someone even more to take if off me!
