I'd chose the 5980 as well.

the 5980 has had a long run with PP. The 5990 is so new and many are still warming up to it.

Personally for me, it's function, then form. But PP has packed a huge punch in a small watch. Some may think it's busy, but think of all the additional features the 5990 has over the 5980. The watch has chops for sure. Before I purchased mine, I was in the market for a 5980 but I was holding out for the right time. Then I saw the 5990 when it launched. Slimmer bezel, more functions, not as chunky looking as the 5980.. I knew it was the PP for me.

Give it a few years. If PP decide to do the 5990 in a blue dial and in gold, it will make it's mark with the collector market just like the 5980 has. It just takes time and the 5990 is still too new for it to trump the 5980. More people own the 5980 currently than the 5990, so take in to account all the biased opinions as well. If more people own a 5980 currently, then more people will support a watch they already own. Not saying this is a fact across the board, But generally that is the way the cookie crumbles.
