Movements:1151 vs. 3606

I am looking to purchase an omega speedmaster day date. there are two models that i am interested in. one is model #3520.50.00 and the other 3220.50.00. the price difference between the two is several hundred dollars. the only feature i am concerned about is the movement. what are the differences between 1151 and 3606 and is it worth the cost difference? thanks in advance

Hello Chris

The 1151 and 3606 are both based on the ETA Valjoux 7751 calibre. The 3606 is a certified chronometer, the 1151 is not.

The new Day-Date Speedmaster (3220.50.00) has a slightly larger case at 40mm versus the previous size of 39mm. The bracelet is also upgraded.

If I were to choose between the new or previous Day-Date Speedmaster, I would go with the newer design.

Hope that helps.

chris,

thanks for the quick response. definitely clears things up. hopefully the won -> dollar ratio continues to get better (for the dollar) and i'll be able to save a few bucks compared to stateside MSRP. :)

picked it up yesterday. i'm definitely glad i waited a few more days, exchange rate got better and ended up paying ~$1300 less than what an AD dealer wanted in the states.

now, which way do i want to set my winder? clockwise or counter clockwise? and what should the rotation frequency be?

Which one did you end up with?

I found the following quote from Padi56:

"The Valjoux 7750 is a Bidirectional winder about 700 turns a day to keep it fully wound. Some prestigious Swiss makes (e.g. Breitling) recommend their autos be manually wound at least once a month, just to make sure the mainspring doesn't wind down too much. This applies particularly to watches with calibres such as the Valjoux 7750-51 that wind clockwise."

(I added the bold at the end)
