"Your papers, please." What meaneth?

Question from a wannabe owner....would anyone buy a newer but slightly used Rolex without the "papers?" What does the term papers mean when you get right down to it? And what are some reasons a watch would be offered sans papers? Many thanks.

personally no i wouldn't.. (unless ofcourse it's a vintage rare piece where finding another similar watch isn't an option).

The papers IMO means the certificate of authenticity.

there are obviously other books such as manuals etc which should come with an A1 watch - but i'd be less concerned of these where missing - but all of this will/should have a bearing on price.

Hi,

To buy a watch without papers is like buying a car without log books(service history). This is not such a problem if the thing is authentic and bought from a trusting source.

Obviously it should be cheaper than one with papers and books depending on how anal you are about these things. It will also help if you decide to sell the watch down the track.

My personal opinion is that I would prefer papers but if the deal was right well I would have to think about it.

Remember just because it has papers does not mean it will be genuine as there are many good copies of books, papers and boxes. So be carefull and if you can get it from a bricks and mortar authorised dealer even better.

The other thing is if the watch has no papers and is sent to Rolex for a service it will come back with a guarantee and what was done. This will certainly help if you sell at a later date as well.

You vill need zese papers to pass zee Zherman checkpoints.

As Andy and Aaron have said, it does go some way to going to demonstrating the watch's authenticity. That said, Padi can tell you about some Italians tricksters who have worked their way around that problem.

The other aspect of box and papers is that since such watches are collectors' items, buyers can be picky about getting everything that came with the watch, right down to the plastic caseback sticker with the red stripe through it. Our resident case study of such levels of anal retention is called JJ.

Ultimately, the best proof that you got the real deal is to pop the caseback off and see what's inside (although Peter's Italians have a way around that too). Rolex knows what they've made, and they're the best-qualified people to tell you if you got a Rolex or a Polex, but they charge money to do that sort of thing.

By the way, welcome aboard!

Hi José,

Welcome to TRF. "Papers" would include, most importantly the warranty certificate duly stamped and dated by an authorised dealer, followed by the booklets.

I tell you what Jose, I had Rolleys on the ranch for 40 years out here in West Texas and I couldn't find half the papers I had on them or many of my dogs. Go into town, have a Rolex certified technician open the hood on that watch and see what kind of shape its in. Those bastards with those thick glasses can tell you all you need to know in about 1 minute and $300. Thats all you want you what to know see. Unlike a car, you can look in the engine on that somsabitch in 60 seconds. Whats the wear and tear, did the previous owner have it cleaned and lubed? If its a dust bowl in there, hairs, etc., stay away.
Best of Luck, all my watches look like there going to outlive my ass anyway.
