Yosemite

Took a drive to Yosemite for my wife's birthday earlier this week. It's 170 miles from my house to the Valley floor. We were there last year also for her birthday and after a year, you can forget what a treasure this place is.

Not crowded at all this time as I think a lot of folks canceled their trips due to the fire. It was devastating as the photo shows and it got sort of close to the Valley; which would have been a real tragedy.

The weather was great with just the slightest of haze from the residual smoke. Amazing place.

Great place to visit. I was a 'local' for a couple of years; in my youth, I nearly became a resident.

On the road in from El Portal we were exploring the side trails and found one of those tall rock formations rising from the hill, with a flat top, accessible from the back. Very cool overlook spot to relax and watch the Merced River.

The 2006 Ferguson Slide along Highway 140 in the Merced River canyon almost turned Yosemite Valley into Yosemite Reservoir!

Before the slide there were -zero- traffic lights in Mariposa County. Then a pair were added at a temporary bridge over the river, around the slide.

The water fountain in the visitors center dispensed water from a glacial-filled aquifer under the valley floor. Fractured granite leaves no sediment or taste in water.

Didn't think the terms, 'Yosemite', and, 'not crowded at all', could be used in the same sentence
Glad you enjoyed your getaway
Such a wonderful place.

Congrats on a fun trip. I haven't been to Yosemite since 1990, before they closed off the Park to passenger vehicles. I really need to go again.

Many thanks to the birthday wishes for the wife.

Doc, you can still drive your car if you want. Since I'm usually there for a couple of days, I find it easier to just park and use the free shuttles. Much more relaxing.
