Sir, it's not real...
Normally I do not burst the bubble of a potential Rolex owner, but today...I did it in a whisper. A couple comes in to look for another Rolex for himself. He stated that he has a DeepSea and wanted to look for something more of an everyday Rolex. No problem, I'll show you what I have. He then asks me what is the DeepSea worth right now. I saw the DSSD on his wrist and asked him if I could see it. So he removed it from his wrist and handed it too me.
I inspected the watch and right in front of him...I spun the caseback off...with my fingers. I lended over the counter in a whisper and said..."You see this 'gold' movement? It's not Rolex. You also cannot spin the caseback off with your fingers on a any Rolex, let alone a DeepSea. As to it's worth, about $200." He asked me how I know it's not real. I told him, you should not be able to spin the back off a DSSD as the watch is rated at 12,800ft...and the movements are not gold plated. I showed him some other characteristics why it wasn't real. He was very calm about the whole thing, which told me...he already knew he bought a fake. I told him if he did indeed buy it under the assumption it was real, I'd go back to where you bought it and have a word with the salesperson. ....and that has been the 3rd fake today....a stainless ladies prez and a stainless ladies masterpiece....hmmmm....

Let me see if I understand you.
1)he wanted to trade is DSSD in for another watch (that is why he asked what it was worth) 2) he knew it was a fake. so (3) he was trying to screw you over. nice catch

No he wasn't trying to trade it in...because he stated he spent $9300 for it...w-h-a-t-e-v-e-r....
The other two fakes were from one woman...as she opens to little bitty box and says, here is my Rolex it's very delicate....Yeah....okay...

I can imagine the scene in Grifters when John Cusak's character tried to make change from his $20 (switching it to a $1 or $5?) and then promptly got his hand smashed with a Baseball bat by the Bartender!
Good to hear he wasn't trying to scam. |

A couple came in you say..? Sounds like those conmen/women are becoming craftier by the second. I'm glad you were not the mark.

No one gets past me on replica's...I make no bones about it. Most of the time I can tell by feel, others...I will do the full blown 'visor/goggles' scenario. The most popular fakes that I see come in are DSSD's, Masterpiece Pearlmasters, 2-tone DJ's and Cartier Tanks. It is amazing the brand of watches that are brought in to sell. I'm interested in most, but the probably the #1 watch I always turn down is a Jacobs & Co. There is no market for the over-blinged watches. My wholesale outlets won't even buy them. I had a former NBA player come in one day with 2 Franck Muller watches he paid $70,000 for...fully encrusted diamond cases. I told him, I would only take them on consignment. To try to find a buyer for those, is like trying to sell a Bentley to a homeless guy.

You would have been the mark if you had not shown a good deal of knowledge. a good con will continue even when he thinks he's been rumbled. He doesn't want the cops called. I wonder how many other shops they tried in the area?
