I thought they waived the fees on those if you exceeded $1m a year. Thought you had to spend at least a hundred k to keep it. I've got a friend who bartends in Cape May and claims to have seen 2. I know he did see one because everyone that worked at the bar saw it too. I think there are a lot more out there than used to be.

The Centurion's card annual fee may seem high (about $5000) but the concierge service that comes with it is just outstanding. I do NOT have one, but I've enjoyed the services from people that do. I agree that some may think of it as a tool for attention grabbing celebrities but there are others that do need the service and find the $5k annual cheaper than say owning a private jet etc. I only have a Plat and I cant tell you how many times it has helped me on travel, booking and emergencies. Dont think of it as unlimited purchase power limited. Its all about the concierge. Bad thing is that it is by invitation only and I believe the US membership is full. Thats ok bc I dont have the $ or the need to call in and have a Lear Jet for tomo morning with tickets to a U2 concert in Venice.

Its $250,000.00 min per year. Not even that gets you in the door. It's invite only.

The Centurion Card, which really is all black, and made of titanium, was introduced in 1999 and is extended to consumers on an invite-only basis. There is no formula for qualifying. "It's decided person by person. The general consensus is that eligibility involves some combination of a stellar credit score, a minimum of $250,000 a year – or roughly $21,000 a month – in charges, and at least one year's history as an American Express cardholder, as well as significant net worth. American Express is tight lipped on the details. It is confirmed that there is a one-time, $5,000 initiation fee, and a $2,500 annual fee.

I have had the basic card since 1981.
I have never found anything that I couldn't buy with it.

i have a friend who once paid with his amex to fill up three chinooks , with long range tanks. needless to say it was an emergency one off purchase, and he got re embursed for the costs , , but amex offered him a black card.
another friend of mine owned a gentlemans club , a rather exclusive one , and some of his celeb clients had them , there are more about than you would first imagine. i dont even have a credit card ,,, so im out. |

We receive about one Black Amex a month at my restaurant. So there seems to be plenty around.

I do not have one but I do know that back in the early 2000s they were much easier to come by (relatively speaking). AMEX has made a concerted effort to reduce the amount of new approvals. For a while it became a celebutard status symbol what the Lidsay Lohans & other attention grabbers were using ad naseum. AMEX did not like that type of publicity for the card b/c there was somebacklash against the people it was originally meant for: wealthy, discerning, high spenders who would find value in the concierge service especially.
As entioned earlier, the rule of thumb has been a couple years of 250k+ spending per year + some level of net worth + willingness to pay the initiation & annual fee. |

It's utterly just stupid to meet the requirements as a private card holder, and get the invite on top of that.
Now it is fairly easy to get one for business. Own your own business, charge everything to your platinum, have a reasonable net worth, and you will get an invite. It's kind of like cheating, but a heck of a lot easier. |

I have Platinum and that's about as high as I will ever get.
Their minimum spending far exceeds my income or spending ability and I could not even afford the yearly fee! That's a damn car payment. I have a couple of friends with black cards and I occasionally see them around here when I am out and about.

I've seen a few dozen out here in Scottsdale over the past several years, they are wierd to hold; thick, heavy and made of metal. It does make a serious statment from the heft of the card alone.

I've seen quite a few in the Bahamas, One and Only Beach Club, Gray Cliff, I see at least one a trip and I've been there 7-8 times.

The criteria for invitation varies by country but in the US, you need an ave annual spend of $250k. $5000 initiation fee plus $2500 membership per year. Members get two cards, one for business and one for pleasure. One being plastic and the other titanium.
They hand them out to celebs the minute they appear on TMZ so seeing a celeb with one is far less impressive My wife works for a super high end designer and their customers typically use Centurion cards. Occasionally, Middle Eastern Princes come in and use a visa with a diamond in it that apparently is the most exclusive of cards (9 figure net worth before qualifying is what I heard). The Princesses have the boutique bring the entire collection to their hotel suite and the next day, they pick up what wasn't chosen and one of their guards give them the cash. On a side note, I was checking into the Danielli in Venice and everyone in front of me was holding their centurion card while I had my lowly Chase United Visa. I kinda felt odd |

Think about it, who in their right mind would admit to having a black Amex on an internet watch forum...

One time when swiped it would not fit into the machine slot. So, everyone at the table had to pool resources (cash).

Really doesn't matter what American Express card you have if you are shopping somewhere that doesn't take American Express! But everyone takes VISA.
