Is this a legit Rolex?

A friend of mine called me and said he found a Rolex he is considering buying. He did not tell me how much the asking price is, but my friend works off shore oil rigs and has 7 Rolex watches already. He asked me to post this on here to find out if its its possibly real or not.

I am assuming it is real because he said the owner bought it brand new and said he will meet him at a Rolex dealer to verify its authenticity, or have it sent to ROlex to verify its authenticity....he said the owner has the original box and paperwork for the watch, even the original sales reciept.

I dont know anything about Rolex watches for the most part so I will let you guys have a go at it

If that`s a real Double Red Sea-Dweller I think you`re looking at a $20-$25k watch.

Higher resolution pictures would be better but from what I can see it looks like the real deal,if I`m mistaken I`m sure another more informed member will set the record straight before too long.

No idea. All I have to go by is what Paul told me about the man that has it is the original owner.

All I know is he sent me the pics and asked me to get this forums opinion. Like I said, I dont know diddly pooh about Rolex watches.

I would like to know what Paul is supposed to be paying for it. I have sent him an email but those oil rig guys work strange shifts

Yes it should. Only a mid 1980's ladies and dwellers should have case back engraving. There are a few very old ones that do also

Very limited production... the "double red" is one the holy grail in rolex sports watches... Put some more pics up

Production of this model was relatively limited and the numbers of surviving watches diminishes over time so it becomes even more rare as a greater number of collectors seek the same type of watch and the law of supply and demand kicks in and prices go crazy.

Looks real. With the appropriate documentation,it looks like someone found a good one!

You'll need better hi resolution close up pics of the dial and case back for starters. You'll also need good pics of the model number and serial number on the case with the bracelet removed. I wouldn't buy one without really knowing the buyer and having done lots of research. Huge chance of getting fingers burned. You'll need to check that the serial number matches with the dial style for that number range. So much to check. An authorised dealer is unlikely to have a clue other than possibly verify its a genuine Rolex. But since so much of the value of a drsd is in the dial you need to be 100% sure it's all correct.

Paul called me and could only talk a few minutes. I told him I really didnt have any information on the watch but he said the original owner, a 72yr old man, bought this watch brand new from a dealer in Atlanta..Paul said the man told him the reciept was dated November 1968 and price was $298.00. He also said he has everything that came with the watch when the man walked out the dealers door, but the box was written on by his daughter he said around 1973 when she was about 5yrs old.

Thats all the info I have right now. I asked Paul to call the guy to let me come take high resolution pics of the watch and get all the information I can off of it..so just waiting to hear back from him now.

Looks like a version IV dial (aka Mark IV) but the purchase date lines up with earlier dial production. These were first made in 1967 but sold to COMEX - then opened up to the public in 1968.

It is possible a version II or III dialed SD was sold in 1968 - and then later on (maybe during service) the dial was switched with a MArk IV.

Some of the early SD dials would fade from black to brown and that was seen as a defect back then. Rolex would update the SD's dial if customers agreed. That is how a legit DR SD could end up with a newer dial. And how a DR SD tropical got so rare.

Getting better pics and the serial # would help sort this out better.
