Funny...

We Europeans might wonder if we can travel with a Patek to US... Most of Europe is very safe and even I have lived here for 60 years, I have never even heard that somebody's watch was stolen.
I wear a Patek 365 days every year - it's the only watch I wear. Sometimes 5167, sometimes, 5070P, 5550P, 5575G, 3700, 3712, 5711, 5980, 5196P, 5110P, 5134P, 5905P, 59601A, 5131G or some other of my Patek watches.
When I'm having holidays in US, I tether go for the steel models.

Best, Kari

Exactly, as long as you're not taking the metro in Paris or other big cities with a gold watch or a Rolex you will be fine, most thieves dont know good watches, so they wont know what the hell your 5167 is and you have 0 risk

I´ve used the Paris metro quite often wearing a Rolex and I think other people are doing this daily.

But in general, the 5167 is my favorite under the radar watch for traveling. And yes, the small thing in the background is the Eiffel Tower.

Paris metro is quite safe for one who keeps an eye on his belongings. Plenty of young east european thieves teams, but they are mostly interested in wallets.

Perfect travel watch, about as under the radar as you can get for a high end watch

Would you feel unsafe for wearing a Patek Philippe outside of the USA & Europe?

There are probably many areas in both USA & Europe that you would not be safe whatever you are wearing.

There is likely to be 0.0000000000000000000000000000001% (estimate) of the population who would even recognise one.

To most people a 5167 would look like an ordinary cheap stainless steel watch

On the other hand if it was a Rolex........................

You have a very good point here!

I do not hang where the junkies are hanging, I stay in good hotels, dine in (relatively) good restaurants, take always (an official) taxi.
To say it in a simple way: I go where I want but try to stay out of trouble. I do not go outside the metro station and yell being totally drunk: "my watch is worth of 100k!"

Best, Kari

More than 99.8% will not notice your watch. While the political climate and threats have changed abroad you are safer in most of the EU than Central America or South America.

All of the countries starting at Mexico continuing to the tip of South America are Third World sans 2-3 at any given time depending on HDI.

Don't be fooled. danger is everywhere if you allow it to be, if you are aware of your surroundings you can minimize a threat.

This is my rule for travel in certain regions where I don't want to think about the safety of valuables other than my life. 5167 can probably be worn anywhere due to stealth factor. Rolex is likely the most recognizable watch in the world especially to thieves and wearing it in certain places of any country introduces greater risk.

I always wonder why people ask these questions.

Do you have common sense? If you don't then you best not.

You realize you could get robbed in San Jose, CA just as easily as Europe--right?

Not every place in the US is safe just as not every place in other countries is safe, if in doubt why bother?, take something else, if not enjoy the trip and the watch

Yeah so have I, but I was attacked twice, once for a jacket, was alone against s one of which had a knife in the metro, needless to say they got the jacket, another time Imwas almost stabbed for a pack of cigarettes, a friend of my parents was killed in Paris when he was car jacked, 3 friends of mine were stabed, 2 seriously one of which in the metro, and I don't know a single white guy who lived in Paris as a teenager and up to 30 who was never attacked, so yeah you can wear a Rolex in the metro, until you catch the eye of a few scumbags who will be ready to stab you multiple times for your watch, when I wore a Rolex in the metro it was always under a sleeve, on the contrary I wore in plain sight my 2 Patek 5712/5726 as I knew no one would know what they are..

True but often the real thieves go where rich people with money and expensive watches go, which is Champs Elysees, Eiffel tower amd many other high end neighborhoods or touristic areas

It's my "go-to" watch for travel and I have never been concerned for my safety. It just doesn't catch unwanted attention.

Never understand this question

You're as likely or even more likely to get mugged in a US city than you are outside of US.

It's all a matter of situational awareness. If you are walking down a street and you feel uncomfortable you turn round and head back to bright lights. That applies to any city in the world regardless. If you don't have situational awareness then my suggestion is don't own a nice watch at all.

There are many threads about traveling overseas with a Rolex in the main Rolex threads. And they provide some good insights. A Rolex is much more recognizable than any Patek watch to a potential thief.

I would say you have a greater chance of having a Rolex stolen in New Orleans during Mardi Gras than any Patek watch in most of Europe.

i wear my 2 tone rolex when i travel. i keep the Pateks at home. I did wear my 5711 on a recent travel to Dubai. I always thought Dubai was a safe country to travel with my Patek :) I entered the Rolex store in Dubai Mall to inquire about the GMT and the clerk immediately notices the 5711. He told me "nice watch" and he also mention he was planning to get the 5712 but now that he sees the 5711, he has changed his mind. :)

Have travelled the world with a 5167 and because it seems thieves have no idea what it is combined with a plastic band.... Never had a problem.

Dubai, Singapore, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Taipei lately with no issues. Also can confirm that been to many other places with my Rolex with no issues. It is not about the city you are in but whereabouts and what time you are there to come across a risk I believe.
