Best ways to sell a pre-owned watch?
Hello gents, this is my first post on TRF. I'm almost ready to dip my toes into the vast world of pre-owned watches-in this case a 3940. But before I do, I'd like to understand how I may possibly liquidate my investment. Whilst I'm nominally an 'accumulator' rather than a 'trader' nonetheless I'd like to know my possible 'exit' strategies. I may need the cash to purchase another watch from an AD for example. Or perhaps I decide that pre-owned is not for me.
I see that a lot of members here have bought and sold a number of watches over time. I'd like to tap into your collective expertise and sought your advice. Thanks. Ben Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I trade in my watches to an AD (authorized dealer) with whom I have an ongoing good rapport. I am sure that I am not getting top dollar on the trade-ins, but I am also not getting fake checks or a blow on the head.

My best way is easy, I have a friend who is a grey dealer in France, I bought him a gold Daytona, plus a few others, and we became friends, when I sold my watches they were on Chrono24, had only propositions of guys which either were too low, or who wanted me to take ALL my watches and meet them in a restaurant in a not very safe, huge understatement, neighborhood, When I was saying we meet at the bank they never answered or tried to make memchange my mind and meet elsewhere, wonder why that is so I contacted my friend and he proposed to out them on sale, at my price, and he would take 7%, and it worked out fine, some grey dealers will want 20-30%, but I was more than ok with 7, nothing to do, just give him the watches, wait and getnyour cash, just be sure to do with a very trustworthy dealer

I have sold to trusted sellers on TRF. As long as you leave a good profit margin for them in your price they are easy and fast transactions.

90% of the time I list the For Sale on the forums and transact face to face in cash inside a bank (no money leaves the bank). This eliminates buyer/seller disputes, risks of shipping, wires, checks etc. The downside is liquidity, insisting on face to face limits potential buyers. I am ok with that and it works OK as I'm normally in very large urban areas with lots of watch buyers!
10% of this time I will sell to a dealer. Lower price realized but better liquidity. The dealers in am familiar with will cover shipping, insurance etc. |
