R or J?

I know that personal preference obviously should play the biggest part in choosing between rose and yellow gold, but in this thread, I'm asking about the other consequences of this choice beyond how happy one might be with the aesthetics.

That is, are there practical considerations regarding discolouration or maintenance? What about desirability and resale value? Are the other factors that result from a choice of one over the other?

I would choose based on how it works with your skin tone.

I suppose that there might be some factors that are general and others that are specific to the watch.

I'm considering a 5227R or J.

For the two sport watches I have YG, the two dress watches definitely RG.

On the 5227 the dial is better looking on the R in my opinion. Another watch, the 5124 for example, I prefer J. I know it isn't available in R but I like the look of yellow gold on that watch.

Do you think that the dial is a different colour on the R than the J, or that the dial is the same colour but it just looks better with the R?

Hard to say. The R version looks more off white but it may be due to the case color. Sort of off topic but if you're considering the 5227, I was in Vegas a couple weeks ago and went to Tesorini, a Patek AD at Bellagio. The saleswoman told me her favorite Patek was the 5227 and I tried it on. It was OK, there is a lot of blank space on that dial and it's expensive due to the hinged caseback, kind of a cool feature but you're paying for it.

It is pricey for a time only watch, but I'm not a flipper, and seeing as I plan to keep it long term, I like the officer's case back providing an opportunity for engraving. It is also mesmerizing to look at that movement in the perfectly polished reflection on the inside of that cover. Calatrava's can seem a bit plain, but it's special.

I wish that I could be happy with a less expensive Calatrava. I like the 5196 (the J is much nicer than the R in that model, IMO), but the lack of a beautiful movement to admire might just be too much of a compromise for me.

I agree with you that it might have been better as a 38 mm watch with less blank space on the dial, as you say.

J is IMHO a little too flashy and bling, while R is just right, would never have purchased a J from any brand, and yes I think resale is better for R, take the same piece R prices are usually higher

I think YG is coming back and will always be timeless. Companies such as AP are starting to release more models in this metal that has been a distant 4th compared to RG, WG, and Plat. I purchased a Cartier love bracelet two years ago and went with classic yellow gold BUT for this piece I think the RG version looks the best with the dial like Martin said. This is a pricey watch but the shape of the case and lacquer dial are so nice and the caseback is very cool. Would've preferred it a bit smaller being a dress watch but no piece is perfect. Congrats in advance!
Here is a J for sale https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=518765
Mods if this is an issue posting the link please take this post down. I have no ulterior motive here or any affiliation to the seller.

The white date wheel and off white dial on the 5227 is not a positive for me. I think the J makes it less obvious by framing the dial and the date window with yellow gold, which contrasts less with both dial and date wheel than the rose gold.

I have owned both and will stick with YG. The RG is beautiful in pictures and in person but unless your skin tone is such that it lends itself to the RG it will appear somewhat off. Unless you have a unique and limited watch the resale on the RG is less, as a rule, than the YG based on my experience and conversations with our TS. The other issue is matching other metals to it as each company's RG is slightly different. Cufflinks, wedding band, class rings, belts, eyeglasses, etc. You get the picture. I knew all of this but I still purchased a RG Daytona and wore it for awhile, flipped it and lost some. No big deal. I will stick to YG, WG and Platinum for now.

Yellow gold will almost always be the 'safer' choice. It transcends fashion and is a decision rarely if ever regretted.

On the other hand, if you're more adventuresome then there's always room for Rose. It's certainly been trendy for a while now and likely will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Irrespective of skin tone and specific model of watch, my best advice is that if this is to be an heirloom piece that you keep for a lifetime and then some (and admittedly this is a rare occurrence, especially around here), always stick with yellow.

Otherwise I'm afraid it's the old saw "buy what you like", as helpful as that is...

I prefer RG as it is a little subtler, YG is making a comeback I see and I do like it with blue.

To be honest except on very slim dress watches and on some models I find YG too bling and a little vulgar, in France brands almost don't sell in yellow to French people, but it's a taste question, I like some full rose gold watches and could see myself getting one some day, but in yellow never

Watch companies use different composition of YG and copper to manufacture Rose Gold (or Pink Gold or Everose Gold) watches. If you look at a Patek Rose Gold watch, it will look very different from a Rolex Everose Gold due to the different copper content.

Historically YG has been the gold standard for precious metal watches. Recently WG and RG has become more popular. I can see YG making a slow comeback in popularity though. Patek YG watches are usually a few thousand $/£/€ cheaper than their WG/RG counterparts.

Best of luck in your watch selection

Agree that the Patek RG is pretty subtle compared to the reddish Rolex RG. I love my 5227R, the dial is mesmerizing. I thought I might not like the white date wheel with the dial but having owned it for a few months now, I think it's perfect.

I prefer rg for that one and in general as it's a little more subtle. Sorry, it's from that other brand

The RG looks kind of funny here. I think it might be the angle though

I think that picture of the RG is a little dark. The rose gold from Patek is subtle and very attractive. A tough choice for the consumer.
