5164 vs 5890/5990
Looking to add one of the above and want to get folks thoughts. Currently don’t have a PP so would be going grey.
I have Lange 1815 black chrono in WG and grey AP 26315 chrono. Looking to add a sports model but stuck on aqua vs Naut. Definitely want some complication on it. Thanks and merry Xmas! |

5990 has everything the 5164 have and more so that looks like the obvious option.
however with the 5990 you are treading off some thickness compared to the 5164.

If you want a complication get the 5980a, the second best Nautilus.

5164 vs 5890/5990
I believe aesthetically you have them in the right order.
5164 > 5980 >>>>>>5990

I would suggest a Nautilus over an Aquanaut.
Since you already have 2 chrono, how about adding the blue 5726? It has the useful calendar complication. |

+1, the blue 5726 is gorgeous. Either way I think you start with a Nautilus to access the metal bracelet and then the Aquanaut at a later date.

For me I would prefer the 5164a or 5890a. The 5990 to me is a bit bulky. The 5164 sits perfectly on my wrist. Any interest in the 5712 or 5711?

I thought about the 5726 blue but hadn’t thrown that into the real consideration set but it’s a good recommendation. I think I prefer a full metal bracelet so maybe avoid aquanaut for now

I own the 5990 and 5164. If I could only keep one it would be the 5164. It is the one I travel with more often when going overseas (or did prior to COVID). It is light and under the radar.. So that would be my choice

I quite fancy an Aqua but i find rubber straps with no micro adjustment a little uncomfortable to wear. Whereas i don’t mind a metal bracelet being a bit loose when my wrist shrinks a little during the day, i like a rubber bracelet to always be snug. So whilst for instance the Daytona works for me, I’m not convinced the Aquanaut would.
I considered the 5712 and the 5990. Two very different watches, with the 5713 being much smarter than the 5990. I really love the 5712 but in the end, i knew that I’d regret not getting the 5990. I’ve never regretted the 5990, it’s spectacular, but it suits my casual dress sense. If i was a suit guy, I’d go for a different option. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

All three references are very nice sports. For me the 5990 is a tad too bulky with the GMT pushers whereas the 5980 got it right proportion-wise.
If you plan on actually using the watch for travels (whenever that might be possible again), then I would go 5164A. The rubber strap is more practical (vis-a-vis getting scratched and banning into e.g. seat belt buckles). The Aqua also fly a bit more under the radar which deflect some unwanted attention. The 5164A is probably as close to a "beater" as Patek will ever go. |

Another vote for the 64. Strap it on and you will find there is nothing else more comfortable

Curve ball... Have you considered the 5968? Certainly my favorite among complicated Aquanaut or Nautilus.
Among your choices the 5164 is likely the crowd favorite but I am neither a big fan of the travel time complication nor of those elliptical pushers on the left side. The 5980 and 5990 are also a lot less pretty than a basic 5711 in my eyes, not to mention the chunkiness of the 5990. |

I have the 5764 R , of course a 5711, a 5711 R and 5990. I love the thinness of the 5711 and 5764 but there is something really special about the 5990. I really like the size and the complications . It would be difficult to choose one over the other but probably would be 5711 first then 5990 and then 64 . Me thinks 5990 is best to hold its value although all are good , JMO . james in San Antonio Tx :-)

I’m biased because I own the 5164. It’s one of my favorite watches and is my go-to travel watch. As stated above, it’s very under-the-radar and it’s also very comfortable especially on a long haul flight. Also, I believe the others you mentioned are both heavier and bulkier.

Have both the 5990 and 5164. Although I love both, if I had to give one up, it would be a very very close call but would have to keep 5990.

If you can get any of those watches, you’ve just got a home run. There isn’t a bad choice, however some choices are better depending what you want it for.
If you want a watch to travel with, the 5154 is for you. Under the radar (sort of!) and the rubber strap is a great option for travelling. If you’re just after a nice watch and won’t really travel with it, then move on, there are better options. 5980 is a great watch, I used to have one. If you want to time events longer than an hour, then this as an obvious choice. There are a few things I’m not that keen on though, which is essentially why I sold it. The bulls eye was too hard for me to read (I’ve got bad eyesight), I fell out of love with the dual (bulls eye is too dominant and the hour markers too big, it was like there was nothing left of the dial. I also found the dial unbalanced with the number of hour markers), not to mention the chrono pushers stick out at a weird angle). Despite all that it remains a classic. If you’re still stuck, then it’s the 5990, and the best of the three in my opinion. It does everything the 5164 does, but just not quite as travel friendly. Then you’ve got the chrono as in the 5980. Sure it loses the hour counter, but it’s so much easier to read because of it. If your just timing up to an hour then the 60 minute display is intuitive, no more squinting at the hour counter first (like the 5980) to see if you’re above 30 mins and then checking the 30 min counter. The only thing missing from the 5990 for me is a running seconds hand. |

Ive owned 5980 both black and blue dials and currently have 5990 and 5164A.
I've never used a chrono for its intended purpose but do use the travel time function. The 5164 is the more comfortable as most rubber straps are. I'd never part with either of the current ones but do regret selling the 5980's but needs must at the time. |

5990 all day IF youre able to get it. I think the 5990 is the best all around sports watch. If that doesn't work id do 5164. I love the 5990 but the dual time function of the other 2 make it a more desirable choice in my book.
