Buying a used Rolex card and papers importance

I’m buying a watch from a reputable watch dealer online. However the watch I have my eye set on does not come with with a card. Talked to the dealer and said that might be able to get the card down the line from the watch because he buys his watches directly from a Rolex AD and they withhold them. But many times they will release them to him 1-2 years later. I’m assuming when the 5 year warranty and you can no longer send the watch for repairs under warranty. Is this a common practice? And

What importance does having the card has when it comes to resale value.

Thank you

Yet another value/resale thread. Yippie!!

ZERO value if it’s an older watch. Don’t buy without a card if it’s within 5 years old. My 2 cents.

You won’t get warranty service so ask this dealer what his warranty is and secondly if you ever do want to resell the watch you’re gonna take a big hit. I’m also assuming the premium is less much like if you purchased from Jomashop. If you plan on keeping it forever I wouldn’t sweat it. But at least get some sort of warranty from the dealer.

Service starts around $750. Its up to you if you want to gamble. Do you want the watch? Do you see the watch sold at a big gray with B&P + card? You need to buy what you want at a price you feel good about.

Personally I like the warranty card on a new Rolex. Having the opportunity to take the watch to any AD for service while in warranty is valuable. Online retailers generally offer a 2 year warranty back thru them only.

Once the 5 year warranty is over, a new buyer can have Rolex service the watch and you’ll get a service card with that.

As for value, during the first five years the warranty card is valuable. After that, not so much.

honestly? If it's still within the warranty period I wouldn't buy it without the card. If it's out of warranty, box and papers seem to add 5-10% to the price.

It's a warranty card, nice to have one if the watch ever breaks in the first 5 years of its life. Otherwise who cares

I absolutely agree. With the exception being if the price was too good to walk away, and the dealer was big enough to trust. If the price isn’t significantly lower, why not just find that watch from another dealer that has a card.

I noticed that also. I buy from trusted sellers always, I absolutely hate the AD game. Really dislike sales period. It’s just not for me. But obviously there’s a balance and I’m not really sure what the answer is.

I’ve read and been told that a full set or the lack there of represents up to 15 percent of the resale value.

Box and papers is very important

A seller Having them greatly reduces the risk of buying a stolen watch, which could mean big problems for you down the line

you do not need the card they will address any warranty issues for you regardless of the card.

People claiming that the card is not important have not been following the market and give you wrong information.
Even if expired it is very valuable and worth more than the warranty itself. After all in the worst case you need a full service which is rather cheap for any Rolex.

Not getting a card should reflect in the price.
If ever you want or need to sell you don’t want to limit the number of buyers.

There are many like me who will never consider buying a watch without. If not for reselling it is a must have from a collectability point of view.

Excellent advice. Even the original Rolex box ads to the overall value these days.

I would trust a grey before an AD. Greys aren’t playing games with lists, watches hidden in the safe at the back, bundle deals, etc.

Another curiosity is the value of the Rolex original price tag with the serial number. My 14060M purchased second hand came with this tag but no box or warranty card. But when I bought the 124060 new from an AD the price tag was removed and not delivered with the full set. A full set is important if you resell the watch or need to service it within 5 years under warranty. Otherwise I actually prefer keeping the OEM price tag in my M and don’t care about a full set for a watch I’m keeping.
