I am so excited!!!!!!!!!
The year, is 19 Blah de blah. TheVtcguy is finishing up college at the University of California, anxiously awaiting the call from his Navy recruiter telling him he had been accepted in to the flight program. BOOM! He was rejected He can always wait one year and apply again… which he vows to do. Now comes the tough part, he has to get a job for that year (OK, I am going to stop talking in the third person now).
I had been a scuba instructor since my mid-teens and worked professionally as a diver during the summers from the Great Lakes to the Yucatan, so I got a job as a professional scuba diver working for a company that harvested kelp off the coast of California. That job was actually pretty sweet, but moving on, I bought a new watch (of course) to wear, it was a Scubapro version of a Chronosport model called the UDT. Some called it the “Rambo” because he wore it in one of his movies, the second I think, anyway my version was somewhat rare (just how rare I was to find out years later). I loved that watch and wore it every day 60-100’ down in the Pacific. I liked the aesthetics, it had the absolutely perfect dimensions and ratio. The features were perfect too. It had stopwatch, date, second time zone, seconds and a movable bezel. After a few years the mechanism died, it was extremely hard to find a replacement, since I had just purchased my first Rolex as a present after earning my Wings, that Scubapro fell by the wayside somewhere and is long gone. Now lets jump about 20 years ahead. I had always kept my eye open for that watch, sorry I had gotten rid of mine, and rarely saw it. I discovered that version was very rare indeed. About two years ago, one popped up in Sweden, and I made an attempt to buy it, but it turns out Jocke had made sure it was sold prior to me getting the chance Still, I kept looking, constantly checking on Crhono24, Watchuseek, NAWCC, even Ebay. I kept hope one would pop up. Then, the other day… ONE POPPED UP!!!!! I contacted the seller and made an offer, of course it was declined I then made another… which was (politely) declined. So, I did some real justification arguments with the voices in my head. I don’t NEED it… Yeah but I WANT it… Will I wear it? YES. You already BOUGHT yourself a present this year, the OLED. Yeah, but that was to reward myself for making it through my mother’s passing, AND Christmas is coming You can certainly buy yourself a Christmas present Well, I can afford it, but really shouldn’t take the money out of the bank. You Dorklehead, that’s what credit cards are for. So, after the voices in my head debated for about 24 hours straight, I got in to a conversation with the seller, he made a counter-offer and I accepted. I’M GETTING THE WATCH!!!!!! I can’t wait. I am really really excited about receiving this. Should be here in a couple days. I think I will put it on a Crown and Buckle strap, buy it a bed, TV, make sure there is a dish full of water for it The below pic is from the ad but you can assure I will be posting more when I get it! I am so excited!!!!! |

Perseverance pays, Paul! Congratulations. Finding a copy of your first serious watch which turns out to be pretty rare is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Of course you'll wear it!

Nice to read a story that actually means something, rather than "hey, I just bought my seventh Daytona to add to the collection of watches that I never wear" thread.
Congrats, and thanks for sharing!
