Moving your watches back an hour question

For all the UK based people on here..

Do you simply wind the watch back an hour?

Or forward all the way?

Wind it back one hour. Just don’t do it between 21 and 3 if you have a date.

Not in the UK, but we still have the same stupidity :(

I simply wind back the watch I intend to wear. And of course I set one hour back all clocks in my house...

Not a problem for most Rolex movements, this usually applies to movements that don't use a cam to change date

Oops. Guilty of this.

Now that I’m thinking about it, the other day i wound back my DJ to get the date set right. Is this an issue?
I just figured the gears running in reverse would be the same as forward.

If it's a GMT-Master II (3185, 3186, 3285 caliber), just jump the hour hand back an hour; no need to hack the movement.

All my mechanical watches are "resting" at the moment apart from my BLRO. I'll be wearing a BB for most of November and when I put it on I will wind it and set the time. The BLRO was easy to knock back by one hour last night.

In December all the winders will be switched on again and I'll be setting and wearing them all in rotation. When I'm starting a watch up from cold I habitually wind forward. No particular reason, it's just how I've always done it, probably because when I first had a mechanical watch as a school boy winding forward didn't confuse the date mechanism.

Back it up an hour (which by the way, I wish we didn’t have to do).

They keep talking about ending the time changes, but it never seems to happen.

Same here ... we have some provinces and territories that don't.

I think for Ontario, being the most populous, and largest trading partner with neighboring states, it'll be up to you guys :guy:

Yes! It drives me crazy. I keep thinking we will be done with this practice, but each year we do it again.

Here in Germany we have the same time change nonsense too. I wound my Submariner forward all the way this morning. I always learned not to wind a watch backwards...probably nonsense, especially as I have a no date Sub, but there we are, it´s an ingrained habit. I always change the time winding forward! No big deal, just a few seconds twiddling...

I'll go against the grain and say I'll move everything forward and try to avoid going backwards. New to mechanical watches so this will be my first time change, but I enjoy the tinkering that goes with moving the time and date forward, stopping the crown when the second hand hits 12:00 exactly, and starting it as soon as my iphone's second hand hits 12:00 so they are in sync to start.

At this latitude it makes sense although tbf if GMT was half an hour forward all the time it’d make sense. Don’t get why some like Italy, Australia use it at all mind. Madness. In Scotland it’d be light at about 0930 until 1430 ish if not used in mid December.

I believe it’s a hangover from ww2 and factories.

I just hack the seconds and take the opportunity to resync regardless of jumping hour hands etc. seems like too convenient an opportunity to miss.

Adjust time back directly, no issues with Explorer and GMT.

I take the DeLorean and time travel forward an hour. Easiest solution.

I just move it back an hour if I am wearing it. Another bill that sat in Congress for 7+ months only to not go anywhere...

Moving your watches back an hour question

What Meyrin said! It’s habit, from owning so many date watches. I don’t use winders, as I believe I’d be putting unnecessary wear and tear on the movements, if they ran constantly. Also, though I do own half a dozen high end winders, I have way too many watches that would need them. Now, they are just pretty wood boxes.

Never given it much thought. Yes, if it's 1-3 hours (day light saving, flying back to the West Coast from NY, etc), I'll just move the hands back. Anything more and I'll just go forward until I get to the correct time

If I’m starting a watch from stopped I’ll always wind it forward out of habit. If I’m changing time zones or Daylight Savings Time I’ll wind it back as long as it’s not in the vicinity of a date change. On my Exp II I’ll use the jumping hour backwards and forwards even through a date change. Having said all that sometimes I have to convince myself that it’s OK to set the watch backwards. Again, habit.

Makes no difference on any modern day Rolex you can change it any time Rolex uses a cam system for the date change.
