What's the card worth?

Hi there, new guy here!

Hope I'm not breaking any rules, but I'm trying to figure out what the original card is worth to a discontinued Rolex.

I've never done secondary market, but I really want a DJ II and you obviously can't get a new one from an AD anymore, so I'm considering the used (gray?) market.

I have a lead on one with the box but no original card. They discontinued the model in 2016 so there are no DJ II's still under warranty anyway. Does this make it worth less? Just trying to figure out if it's negotiating power for me or not...

Thanks in advance!

I’d buy condition and the seller before the card but I’m probably the outlier here.

Well speaking for myself the only time a warranty card/paper has any value if it has any valid warranty if it's expired it's just a bit of plastic and would not pay extra for a box or a outdated warranty.Condition of watch and whether any service history far more important than a outdated bit of plastic.

I’d be worried about whether the watch was stolen. Boxes can be purchased, on eBay. You have no record of provenance. That is why it has value, and importance. Personally, I’d wait to find one with docs.

Warranty cards can be faked too.

I’d personally never buy a recent modern watch without papers. In this climate, where everyone knows about Rolex value and alleged “investment value” who throws the box and papers out? I think that happened far more frequently 10+ years ago. Not so much now.

That said, I think a DJ2 is just out of the “recent modern” box though, so a warranty card would not be a must for me. Condition is far more important.

I would estimate a warranty card adds at least $500 maybe $1,000 in the DJ2 example. Just my estimate, I am not an expert by any stretch.

Also, buy the seller.

Warranty cards are faked by the Chinese, who deal in brand new counterfeits, not by sellers of legit Rolex older references. My worry would be that a respectable dealer could unknowingly purchase a stolen Rolex, and offer it for sale.. Should that happen, buyer could sendj to RSC, for service, and the watch could be confiscated. That’s why I want all original docs.

Warranty cards/papers are also faked/altered on older watches too. It is not limited to “brand new.”

I agree with concerns about unknowingly buying a stolen watch. Valid concern.

I am on Moda which is a FB group comprised mostly of dealers, plenty of watches there trade hands without all of the original paraphernalia. The older the watch the less important it is, I would say a warranty card might add between $500-1000 to a watch’s value.
As others have said the seller’s reputation would be more important to me than a card if I’m buying the watch to wear. I would not buy a watch without provenance from an individual, less important from a well known reseller.

You make a good point, Art. Buy from a trusted dealer, rather than an individual. I’ve never dealt with anyone, other than an AD, or a grey dealer with a stellar reputation. All of my higher end pieces had all docs, and boxes. Just be very careful, OP.

On a newer watch, it is definitely worth less as most modern buyers will only buy complete sets. You will really feel the pinch whenever you try to sell or trade the watch. How much is it worth? Hard to say. Ten percent or so.

Condition is paramount. The old cards are negotiating fodder, so take your best shot.

If the watch is in demand, then you might not get any leeway because if you don't get it, the next guy will. If not, you may get a few bucks off.

Welcome to the forum.

Pass on this one - DJII’s are plentiful with full sets on the secondary market.

Find one here in TRF classifieds.

The one you are looking at has the best price ? Sitting for ages ? There is your answer.

Myself like many others will never buy a modern watch without box and papers.
Obviously the watch will have value for people who don’t care about those things but is worthless to me if I was buying.

500-1000$ seems about right.
But are you sure you want a DJII? This model is horrendous. Look at the DJ41 instead

Even though it's discontinued, that watch is modern enough that I'd want a complete set and there's plenty of them out there.
May not mean anything to some but on a modern watch I just prefer full sets.

I like the reference and would buy with or without the card from the right dealer. The price would need to be reflective of the box and warranty card situation and the variance could be as much as 1k plus depending. DavidSW has three up on his site at what I consider fair starting prices. He is as good as they get and will stand behind everything he sales. Check it out. The seller in the pre-owned market is everything for me. Good luck.
