Crazy Experience at NYC AD

Yesterday I took a mid morning train into NYC so that I would have a few hours to shop before my business meeting. I wanted to visit my favorite AD to look at some DateJusts to surprise my wife for Valentines Day.

When I got to the store I chatted with Mark for a bit before getting down to business. We discussed our holiday trips - Mark went to Disney with his wife and kids - and my wife and I were in the Caribbean. After some pleasantries I asked to see some Datejusts. To my surprise he told me that all Datejusts - especially the hot models - were allocation only and next to impossible to get.

To say that I was surprised was a huge understatement. Has the entire Rolex world gone made?

Then Mark suggested that I look at some sports models. He said lots of fashionable women were wearing oversized watches like the Daytona.

Mark walked me over to the corner display case, and to my surprise he had both the black and white ss Daytonas! What was going on?

After my initial shock, I noticed that the corner cases were stocked full of ss professional models - Subs, See-Dwellers, GMTs, Explorers, Daytonas - everything you could possibly want!

Still in shock, I asked about the Pepsi that I have been lusting over. Mark picked up one of several and handed it to me to try on. He explained that the usual discount was 10% but he could offer me 15% because of my buying history.

Mark's cell phone rang and he politely excused himself to take an important call. I took the interruption to pull out my phone and check The Rolex Forum. Sure enough, between all the threads about "is it safe to wear my watch to (fill in the blank)" and "got my first scratch" there was plenty of talk about the shortage of DateJusts - especially the PM models. Apparently everyone has gone crazy for Datejusts since Chris Evans wore one in the last Avengers movie.

Totally confused, I checked out DavidSW's site and sure enough, all professional models were selling for way under retail.

When Mark returned from his call he noticed the shock on my face. Then he suggested that if I buy one of the ss models he might be able to get me a PM dateJust in a few months - but probably not before Valentines Day.

I walked out of the store. I decided not to buy anything because it only made sense to wait to see if prices would continue to fall. Why rush a decision when there is always the possibility of a better deal tomorrow ? Who wants to buy a Pepsi if doesn't hold its value?

I was awakened with a jolt. My wife asked me what was wrong because I had been talking nonsense in my sleep. I stared at the ceiling and listened to the rain pelting against the windows. Couldn't fall back to sleep.

I bet if Rolex severely limited production of DJ, OP, and Pearlmasters then a scenario like this would certainly be imaginable.

My heart was beating with excitement and I was tempted to grab the phone to call my AD... until jolted by reality.

As soon as I would see both a black and white SS Daytona in the window, I'd know the dream isn't real. Now if an AD called me saying my spot on a waiting list was next and they just received one and it is mine if I want it, now that would be a dream I would believe (even though I am not on a waiting list).
