First be sure it has the correct dial there are 7 variations.
Look for the correct year matching the serial on the Rolex serial number list from bobs watches. Mk1 1971-1973 • Mk2 1972-1977 • Mk3 ( rail dial) 1974-1977 • Mk4 1977-1980 • Mk5 1979 – 1984 • Mk6 replacement, tritium • Mk7 replacement, luminova So try to avoid mk6 or mk7 dials if you want it all to be original. The correct bezel, as they are very expensive and the older ones are hard to find. 1. thick font top, seen with Mk1 and Mk2 dials between 1971 and 1973 2. thick font centered, seen with Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 dials between 1973 and 1977. 3. thin font full, seen with Mk4 dial between 1977 and 1980 4. thin font reduced, seen with Mk5 dials after 1980 The case: there is a case with pointy crown guards in the first series, (MK1 dial) the later versions have bigger crown guards. Mk1 comes with a straight second hand, but prepare to pay a premium for a mk1. Bracelet is a 7836 on the mk1 and a 78360 on the later models.
