Daytona Problem
Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a loupe and took a good look at the Rolex Daytona I purchased a couple of weeks ago. I noticed some black specs or dots on the luminova in the 30, 35 and 40 minute markers. I also see rough edges around the inside chrono dials. It keeps time really well, all the functions work properly, the model numbers and serials looks good. It came with an insurance appraisal from a Rolex retailer in Florida. Is this a good fake with better fake paperwork? I took out my macro lense and took these shots. I am planning to have it appraised at Rolex NYC next week. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. CBR |

CBR, I don't have a powerful loop, but I looked at mine as close as I could. I too, see minor imperfections, I would submit if you look hard enough at any watch you can find something not perfect. Your Daytona was hand made to a point, so there might be some differences in workmanship that don't necessarily make it a fake. From the pics, that looks authentic to me, but I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. You're doing the right thing by taking it to the RSC. Best of luck, let us know what happens there.

Did you buy the watch brand new, or secondhand?
If you are not able to utilise the issued Rolex 2 year warranty (and you don't want to pay Rolex to fix it) then your only recourse is to go back to the original seller and ask for him to repair the watch. I can see some black specks on the 40 minute marker which I would not ordinarily expect to see. Anyway good luck. And welcome to the forum

Must admit, I wouldn't expect to see the rough edges around the Chrono dials.
I take it, you aren't aware of it having a replacement dial? Rob

Maybe it's a frankenwatch. Nope, they never mentioned a replacement dial and those dots/specs really bother me. I'll bring it to the Rolex and have it checked out. Thanks, everyone.

Welcome to the Forum.
I am sure that a visit to a RSC will give you all the answers you need and you can then you can make a decision on what you want to do. The spots on the markers can certainly be seen without a loupe and my guess is that you might not have an original dial. Let us know the outcome.

Not sure that is is fake, but the sub-dials should not have rough edges like that. If it is new I would demand a new dial!

Well, I had the watch appraised at the Rolex in NYC. They couldn't tell me what the dots are or why the dial edges are rough but said they could service it for $600 and if it is dust, the dial can be cleaned and if I want to replace the dial completely, I could have that done in addition to the service.
I asked them if they could authenticate the watch and they told me that they do not autheniticate watches but they do offer an inspection where they open the watch, check the movement, and provide written appraisal. I asked them if the appraisal authenticates the watch and they said they are only able to appraise 100% authentic and genuine Rolex Watches and the price would be $150. I really didn't see much of a choice there so I gave them my credit card and told them to appraise away. About 20 minutes later, they gave me the watch back and told me to expect the written appraisal in two weeks. |

For $150 I would have expected them to deliver it there and then on a golden platter.

This is the stupidity of the industry,,, they should have been able to tell you if it was a fake when it was opened and not for $150!, if not then they sould not be touching your watch. And $600 for a service! Are they kidding... I am so happy I have a base of watch makers the give me trade prices. I pay 1/3 of that!
If they are cleaning it then they should be willing to take the $150 BS inspection charge off the cleaning. I could tear down, clean and reassemble this movement in less than 4 hours! |

I cannot tell from the pics but I would guess that one of three issues exist with the dial.
1. Non Rolex dail. 2. Bad refinish 3. Most wathes have a clear top coat even though you may not know it... this layer could be damaged and that would indicate water damage and it should be looked at. |

Take the watch back to the place you purchased it at.... why should it have one issue at all?

Doesn't look like a genuine dial to me, you generally see small indents where the sub dial hands joins to the face of the watch and these seem to be missing. Also the fact there is a "grain" within the subdials seems suspicious.
Best of luck! |

I'm sending the watch to a watchmaker for a thorough inspection tomorrow.
