Your Explorer is teriffic, I had a 114270 too but I also have a 1016, so I couldn't keep both, but I do have great memories of the 114270.
The lamp is very interesting, any details? Understated elegence and understated strength, reliability and accuracy are all there with the Explorer. I like the size, it doesn't look to small and it is very comfortable to wear. What serial prefix is the watch, did you get it new or as new? & 73 |

Thanks for the kind words folks.
The Explorer is LNIB, D serial number from Feb 2006. Got it from a chap in the US, great service and reasonable price. Nothing like it in Perth. BTW, the lamp is a miners safety lamp used in the collieries to detect methane (height of the flame) or lack of oxygen (no flame!). This one is genuine ie certified for use in an underground colliery, made by The Protector Lamp and Lighting Company, Eccles, UK. There now its Post 101! |

Hi miner,
Congrats on the new Explorer. Excellent watch which is the only sports watch in the world with absolutely no functions except telling time!! Seriously, it's a superb looking watch. The only deterrent as far as I'm concerned would have to be the smaller size. Othewise, full marks on a beautiful dial and one of the best movements out there. Wear it in good health!! Cheers - JJ

You can also use the lamp for testing for hot air when JJ is around. The flame flares bright green and then fizzles out to nothing as all the oxygen gets used up.

Nice Davey lamp old ones now with the Pit badge and numbers are getting very collectible now.And used for what you said and actual lighting in the olden days.Canaries were used as well to test for gas as well, much more sensitive lungs than humans,
