Man I love vintage and Tudors offered some rare oysters over the years that just seem to scratch my itch.

This "Snowflake" Sub is a perfect example. Blue dial and bezel, square hands and hour markers, and all wrapped in a classic Rolex Oyster.

Dan, I really admire your taste in watches. I've never liked blue watches, but lately I've been looking for that exact watch! I know I've been calling the DSSD my grail, but that one is to die for. And all the better, it's "affordable"

Being colorblind I've tended to stay away from colors. But a few years ago I bought a Tag Heuer "Steve McQueen" Monaco with the blue dial w/ white subs for it's vintage charm.

And Tudor offered so many variations compared to Rolex in dial design, case size, and color. So, for me, the blue Snowflake was THE Tudor Sub to acquire.

I can't wait to get it back from my watchmaker.

I've seen many examples if this. My guess is that when the early black dialed Snowflakes exhibited early oxidation and the blue dial versions were treated to solve this problem.
Just a guess though. As log as they're original it's OK with me.

You are right Dan

The poor quality of the dial coating and its vulnerability to moisture led Rolex to propose another dial. Starting in 1975 dials with a blue finish were introduced which had much better tolerability to water. These dials had square then "Mercedes" style markers and hands (see images to the right.) These blue dials proved to be an excellent choice in that the dials were coated with an enameled material which prevents ageing. The case reference is now 9401/0 or 94010, and the movement is the current ETA.

I remember turing down an early Daytona for 2.5k sterling..And seeing a new orange hand explorer II in an AD's window. Hindsight is a wonderfull thing.
