What happened? I had negative net worth in 2008 and no watches back then, but it appears during this time people were passing on GMT's and flipping the milgauss? And the OP passed on an LV??

Two years ago a polar tritium explorer II (full set) was $4600. Everything Rolex will have its moment at some point. The Milgauss will have its day, I promise you

When the Milgauss returned in 2007 the 'green glass' version was referred to as a 50th anniversary model and everyone assumed it would be a limited run. There were tales of the glass being difficult to manufacture so Rolex were going to cease production etc. It was extremely sought after for a short period.

Who has a 2008 Rolex catalog? Who has a 2008 collection?? Dark days economically but a great era for Rolex design. A transitional era between "vintage" and the ceramic pieces we see today.

I remember when the GV was going for $20K. I'm glad I sold at that price. That watch was hyped up big time.....short lived.

It's just nuts. I looked at 2 brand new polars at an AD in 2010 and passed on them at $3,500 or $3,600 (whatever it was). Later that year I was messaging with a grey dealer here and almost bought the same serial range for $3,150 but it sold while I was bargaining. That was back when buying grey meant you got a sweet discount on the same thing vs an AD, plus no tax.

Just a couple of years ago I was looking at them again and saw they were in that mid to high $4,000 range, then they got up to $5,400 and then BAM the rocket took off. The ones I am looking at now are around $8K!!! I still want a polar but damn, if I ever get the call from my AD I can get a brand new sub 124060 for the same price before tax. The sub is a way better deal for the price.

Wearing mine today; I didn't buy it to make a profit or because it was trendy. It's a beautiful technologically superior watch, imho!!!

Meh, in late 2008 I remember almost buying a 116718 for $16.5k on another of the big watch forums. It was minty, but I passed. I just couldn’t justify it to myself back then

Picked it up at a much higher price in 2018. Still extremely happy with it.

The original SS/Plat Yachtmaster also had its moment in the sun. I still remember walking into an AD in early 2000 asking for a 16520. He didn’t have one of those but with great fanfare went back to the safe and presented a new 16622 to me as a consolation prize. I believe the MSRP was then around $6200. Don’t remember how much grey price was but it was at least a grand over that.
Just a few months later I was offered a 16520 elsewhere and sold the YM for more than I paid for it to fund the Daytona.
Recovered financially a year or so later I bought another YM, they were still not shown in cases back then.
What’s happening now is not unprecedented, the hype phase is just lasting longer now.
