Transaxle from James Deans 550 up for auction.

Did anyone see that the transaxle from James Deans 550 Spyder is up for auction on bringatrailer.com? The bid is currently at $128,550. A piece of history... A bit rich for my blood but I can see the price going through the roof on this.

I wonder how many people haven’t bid because of the potential juju associated with the car.

I don't buy into the "curse" of Little Bastard and I think it would be an interesting conversation piece.

I get that people wouldn't want it because it could be seen as a morbid piece of a tragic event. There is however, a collector out there somewhere with the means and desire for such a piece that could drive the price of this to the moon.

This four-speed manual transaxle is said to have been part of James Dean’s 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder.

Kind of the real definition of ambulance chasing.

I guess it's like the phenomena of people can't turn away from a staring at a traffic accident or death. Or the attending of public executions.

I guess it's primal. Kind of a "better you than me" kind of thing.

Interesting item, indeed. I certainly wouldn't want that since it was tied to a fatal accident but clearly folks are willing to bid.

It would make a nice coffee table at a high end shop or lounge. I'm interested to see what it ends up selling for.

I wouldn’t want it.

I also wouldn’t want the wristwatch made a few years back from a piece of the Titanic.

I’d need a lot more provenance than this to cut that kinda dough loose:

“This four-speed manual transaxle is said to have been part of James Dean’s 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, from which it was separated at an unknown point

“The wrecked car was reportedly sold by Dean’s insurance company to another Southern California racer, and the transaxle was later separated from the vehicle before being placed in storage for several decades”

Transaxle from James Deans 550 up for auction.

You can follow the chain of custody from Porsche to Dean to the stampings on the magnesium case.

$382,000 was the magic number .. I am actually surprised it wasn't a bit higher.

Here is the car after the accident in Sept. 1955

“ Rumor has it that Dean’s car, which he’d nicknamed the Little Bastard, was cursed. After the accident, the car rolled off the back of a truck and crushed the legs of a mechanic standing nearby. Later, after a used-car dealer sold its parts to buyers all over the country, the strange incidents multiplied: The car’s engine, transmission and tires were all transplanted into cars that were subsequently involved in deadly crashes, and a truck carrying the Spyder’s chassis to a highway-safety exhibition skidded off the road, killing its driver. The remains of the car vanished from the scene of that accident and haven’t been seen since.”

I have no idea if this is true or just myth but here's the article to your post....

There’s was a reference made to the curse and some of this in an episode of Supernatural.
