Help me decide: 5905P or 5236P

Hello,

I can decide. I went to the geneva shop to try them.
I aleary have a sport rolex submariner and a dressy JLC Reverso Duo Face.
I want now a complication in precious metal from patek.

In my short list 5905P and 5236P are highly appreciated.

Both quite large watch and platinum.
IMHO, without being an expert:
- 5236P: very modern, technically superior QP, might become collector.
- 5905P: more classic, thicker, more everyday use. More balanced watch.

Do you agree? Which one should I pick? I dress casual everyday and few time per month a business suit.
Thanks
Tony

I’d go 5909P because it’ll be discontinued very soon.

I like the 5905P looks much more. To me, the 5236P doesn't look like a PC, and I don't love the inline date thing. Too much in one window for me. But what do I know?

Oh now. The AD told me that I should wait 6 month at least to get one… it’s dead then for 5905P.

There is a huge price difference between the two.
the 5905 is a good watch (although i might be leaving towards the new steel variant).
the 5236 is a little bit expensive for the rest of PP PCs. yes it has an additional complication with more parts and new caliber but honestly the price is confusing.
if i were in your shoes, i would either go for a simple PC (5327 or 5320), or extend the budget for a PCC

2 weeks ago, he had one 5496R left from last year. I thought it was strange given the demand to have some stock, therefore I did not consider it. Now that the waiting/discontinuty is an issue, I went back to buy this watch. IT'S GONE... Jeez bad luck.

Geneva Salon is very different from a lot of ADs. They do serve local customers, but a lot of their clients are heavy hitters who own a large collection and have been Patek collectors for a long time.

You may be able to get the 5905P or the 5236P more easily from a regular AD outside Geneva. The 5236 is newer, so perhaps not as readily available. But the 5905 has been around for a while and should not be hard to find, maybe with a discount if you find the right AD.

Since the 5905 is an Annual Calendar Chrono, it will be overshadowed by the Perpetual Calendar Chrono in many situations and it shares the same movement as it's older sibling the 5960. The 5236 is a different design and definitely more of a collector's item.

I tried 5236 and really like it - the price is quite higher tho - although the value as it’s new is higher than retail

5236 is expensive. True. I like it's modernity and vintage touch in the same watch.

5327 The problem is the dial. It's not a white dial as picture may appear. It's a glossy "ivory" white. it's too much IMHO. 5320 would be perfect if it had a white or blue dial. it look old style.

Everything in one line should theoretically make it seem cluttered (that inline) but I actually find the watch very clean: there's a lot of "empty space" on the dial.

The dial is amazing. Looks textured and PP has designed the watch so that nothing distracts you from the dial. Even the hands are thin and long so it doesn't get in the way of the dial.

C.f this to the 5320 where you have the Arab numerals, stepped lugs and syringe hands. It gets "distracting".

I hope this helps!! 20220101_142921.jpg

you are exactly right
the 5320G is vintage inspired per Thieery Stern words himslef.
the combination of cream colored dial, syringe hands, box crystal, triple steped lugs are all inspired by vintage patek. i believe ref 1591 is the muse here.
in real life the watch looks great

the 5236P is priced very high compared to the normal PC because the 5236 new caliber (31-260 PS QL) saw the introduction of an additional 228 parts to be able to display the date in that way (240 Q has only 275 parts and 324 S Q has 367 parts).
SO the additional complication in manufacturing process is being factored in the price (kinda like ref 5520P which uses minute repeating technology to power an alarm travel watch....it is priced closer to a MR rather than an alarm watch).
for that reason i would suggest stretching the budget and getting a PCC in yellow gold
