So Angry. Watch's Overall Package Ruined.
I am so angry. I don't really know how to escalate this. I'm fuming!
I've really looked after my watch and all the associated gear. The box, polishing cloth, tags, card, bottle of bubbly from the AD, age appropriate catalogue and valuation have all been stored in a dry and dust free environment. This will help future values for sure. The watch went in for a service and I specified no polishing, obviously. Picked the watch up today. Running fine. Not polished - good. But, as I walked out I had a thought. I popped back to check and yes, they've put new spring bars on it! Must admit l lost it. I never asked for these. I guess I was also angry at myself for not saying not to change them. I told the person to go find my originals. Apparently they just get tossed away with all the others. Not tagged or anything. I tried to explain my watch's originality and value had been ruined due to their incompetence but it didn't seem to register. What can I do to rectify this?

Even if I could've had my old ones back to add to the package, that would have helped..

Best ask if they changed the oil to new rather than using some originally dated/period correct stuff.

I was told at my AD that is a RSC, they do change the spring bars at a service.
Spring bars can fail or break, assuming that your watch is the 14060M - Rolex has these spring bars and they are original (just as when your watch was purchased new). I doubt the value of your piece has gone down in anyway - you can ask if they used Rolex spring bars to replace, if not, have them order a set for you - shouldn't be more than $20 for a package of 5 (or they might give them to you for free).

I think there are much better things to get upset about. Spring bars wear out and lose their strength overtime. Move over what if one was slightly bent or had an issue you didn't see? Parts inside your movement were replaced with new parts from Rolex, what's the issue with replacing spring bars?
With the exception of having gold spring bars replaced with stainless (serious jerk move) , I've never seen anyone upset over spring bars or worry if they were original.

The oils in use now are, as far as I know, the same as when my watch was manufactured. Do you think this is something I should consider in the future? I know that some vintage car/bike guys like to source period correct lubricants.

Springbars are disposable items if checked during service they might have lost strength or even corroded.
I don't think them being missing will do any harm after all you didn't get the worn out replaced parts from the service. This is just an external component.

I get they could have been damaged. But having the old ones would help keep the package complete.
I wonder if they could have been refurbished and reused if I had asked?

Rolliworks has a special spring bar refurbishing service. Laser weld and restore ends to OEM, rewind and re-heat treat the original springs, straighten tubes if needed (they have a special spring-bar tube straightening machine). Think it runs about $100/springbar. Totally worth it to retain that all original feel!

Geez. I am without words of advice, however, I have contacted my AD AND all grey dealers I have dealt with requesting the bottle of bubbly that I never got with any of my BNIB's. And, I informed them that I want the original bottle...age appropriate.

As far as I know, even in the vintage world, once a vintage piece is offered and it has a compete set, like yours, what buyers really look for is the original dial, hands, time correct insert, bracelet etc.. but not spring bars.
You have nothing to be mad about in regards to losing its “originality”. Like others have said, spring bars usually tend to bend over time and I’m sure having them replaced to new bars is better than losing your time correct bracelet because of your old bent ones

Spring bars are consumables.. Do you keep the original and worn tires from your once brand new car?
They replace them because they could fail over time risking your case falling onto the ground. Take a step back and relax. There’s things to get worked up on in this hobby, but this certainly isn’t one of them. It’s not like they damaged your unworn watch’s mid case. |

Pop your souvenir champagne and drink it all; you'll be able to relax and enjoy your freshly serviced Rolex.
Or, please create more of this beautiful satire! Whichever is more applicable to your situation, please get to it!

No way is that getting opened. That's staying with the watch when it gets sold..
