New Roaster

I've been roasting my own beans for about 20 years. Started with a cast iron pan back in the day. Progressed thru various methods then landed on an i-Roast glorified hot air popcorn popper. It lasted for 10+ years but finally started to give me poor results so the hunt was on. Gene Café to the rescue. It's a little larger but the advantages outweigh any size difference. The old one relied on the fan cfm to stir the beans while roasting. This one has motor driven rotating drum so there's much less cfm needed to roast the beans. Result is much quieter and very low smoke output. My range hood exhaust fan easily handled any smoke. The roast was perfectly even. This was a French roast. Beautiful. Love this unit already.

That is Awesome! I imagine you still have to learn to dial it in for specif roasts and beans? Fantastic!

Minor procedure performed on the Lucca M58 (pump outlet gicleur blockage). It’s like a new machine now.

Depending on where you live there is normally a couple places online or in large cities that sell green beans. A few of my friends in the USA order through Sweet Maria's online. If you google search green coffee beans you'll find local and online sellers.

The left dial sets the temp and the right sets the time. You can set them for a straight to temp & time roast or at anytime during the roast you can adjust either one. This works great for me as I like to follow specific roast profiles depending on the bean. I keep a profile chart with temp and dwell times. Some profiles have 3 or 4 temp changes before cooling begins.

They look good Larry. I haven't tried beans from New Guinea. Hard to tell from the pic but it look like they're a full city roast. I'll look for some green beans in my area.

one our partners has a new, co-branded roast available: https://www.toptubecoffee.com/products/the-wolfpack

Last years version was pretty solid. Fruity undertones that paired pretty well with milk (ie macchiato). Did well for a cold brew, too. Was bummed that I only got a couple bags. I expect this new roast to be the same. Even better is that they were true to their word and cut us a check from the proceeds.

Colombia Naturals, I have never had one I liked enough to bring to the states. Colombia is great at washed arabica, the best IMHO, there naturals and honey and various experimental fermentations are the younger gens trying to spice things up a bit. Can't blame them for trying, but the tried and true essence of quality and consistency for Colombia are there washed arabicas.

If you like a natural like I do IMHO no one is better than Ethiopia, multiple varietals as well. Yirg, Sidamo, Guji, Limu etc. all fantastic!

Picked this up in Mammoth yesterday, 12oz $24 a bag. A little tart and too much acidic taste for me but a few friends love this roaster and their coffee. We will need to try some other...

Found a Winner in TJ! So good but only package in small bags. Would be appointmently $15 a pound.

Apparently the soil is very good in the region these different beans are grown in and the flavor definitely comes through.

Where’d you send for service? And any idea what they did?

I took it to where I bought it from, an independent retailer that also services machines and grinders. It was due for a service anyway, but my hand was forced one morning when a massive amount of steam came out of the top, a fault they somehow couldn’t replicate. But when I got the freshly serviced machine home, I immediately noticed a slow hiss inside it, condensation inside the PID, and a slow-forming puddle under the machine.

Took it back again and, after another month, they said it was a steam hose locknut at the rear of the steam tap that just needed tightening. Pretty frustrating wait, though they had given me a loaner machine.

Are coffee bags getting smaller and more expensive or I'm I going crazy? Picked this up yesterday. Had a cup and it was good. Looking forward to home brewing.

My last bag was 10oz for $20. My usual bag is 12oz for $18. Was wondering why I'm a day and $2 short....now I know.

Big fan of the Monty and Joey. Both a little more high maintenance (ie can just leave in the sink or dishwasher), so I wash by hand.

Also really like Inker, but can't find a reliable source for them here in the US anymore.

Recently tried some double-walled glass Delonghi cups for my espresso, and not a big fan. I feel like they do too good of a job keeping the shot too hot for too long.
