Datejust or TOG?

Hi all,

Need some help over here.
It would be great if you, as pros could give me some advice.

I'm pretty new in the rolex world. I actually just wanted to buy a nice watch, already thought of rolex.
Than I started researching about which one to buy... and my addiction started... that was 2 years ago... and I still didn't get any...

There are numerous wonderful pieces....
but as it would be my first rolex, I narrowed the search down to two watches:
SS Datejust black dial and SS TOG back dial.

Thanks for your help.
Best Regards.

both of those are superb, classic and quite similar looking watches but my vote goes to ToG...its just the perfect balance of sportiness and classic Rolex dressiness...that red hand is a killer...so my vote for ToG...but generally I guess the Datejust is a more regular in demand watch so its resale might be easier and all...but for use, and daily wear, on pure down-right killer esthetics my vote goes to Turn-O-Graph :)...share eventually what you buy

Welcome to the forum!

You know, I prefer the look of the TOG in photos, but the DJ wears much nicer on my wrist. I suggest trying them with as many different dial/bracelet/bezel/material combinations as you can, and one will really grab you. The difference between dials alone can turn a watch from a No into a Yes!

Personally I'd go for the Datejust, I find that the Turn-O-Graph is neither here nor there, it seems to me that Rolex don't exactly know what to do with the watch, but feel obliged to keep it alive because of its history. Then again, I know a lot of people who love having the red seconds hand and having the timing function, so there's an argument for and against it. My advice would be to get both of them side by side in the flesh, and see which one jumps out at you and looks better on the wrist - either way you're getting an excellent watch.

Best of luck

Chris

I agree with Asad. But then I'm a self confessed bezel fiddler. Either way you can't go wrong.
Good luck,

I tried both of those two exact ones in your pictures yesterday at a local AD. They were both nice. The TOG was a tiny bit heavier then the DJ. it was a little more sporty then the DJ. I definitely recommend trying them. Seeing a them in a pictures and seeing them on your wrist are two completely different things. I really liked the look of the DJ i tried but it didn't look quite right on my wrist. Trying them on should help with choosing one.
good luck

I also tried on the exact same watchs in the photo. The bezel on the TOG and the red hand and date sold me. I could not resist,it arrived in the mail 3 days ago and it is absolutely stunning. A beautiful and dead on accurate watch. I could not be any happier with my first Rolex. Sorry for getting carried away.

I'll vote for the TOG, it has got all the Rolex classic-features: the bezel, the cyclops, the red secondhand, date and T-o-G letters. It's sporty and classic in one.
Try them on and follow your heart.

Btw I've got the same problem: which one is it going to be: TOG or DJ. But most of the time I'm dreaming of the TOG.

Assuming you prefer a black faced Rolex. Why not try the black faced explorer II or the 2009 launched oyster perpetual (without date)?

I have 2 rolexes. A 2008 white faced Exp II & the 2009 dateless perpetual black faced white gold bezel on oyster bracelet. Was into Maurice Lacroix until Federer changed base to Rolex.

Cheers..

DJ for me.

The TOG has never found favour here in Japan. If you want to sell or trade-in your DJ its easy to get a good price.

With the TOG the offer will be lower and not all dealers will take it as a trade in

A few years back I purchased a gents TT TOG on jubilee bracelet. I enjoyed the watch but decided to replace it with a SUB because I wanted something larger and something that allowed for minor sizing adjustments which could not be done on the jubilee bracelet/clasp. I was shocked and disappointed by the huge hit I took when I tried to sell the TOG. I lost close to 50% of what I paid for the one year old watch even though I received a 10% discount from the AD at original time of purchase. When I decided to sell it, multiple dealers told me that while the watch looked like new there was "no market" for the watch and that they struggled to sell the new ones in their stock. I should also note that all this occurred before the economy tanked.

Recently, a friend tried to sell her TT ladies DJ which was purchased new about 4 years ago from an AD and was offerred between $1000 and $2000 by all three ADs and one grey market dealer she visited despite the watch being in pristine condition. It seems that the DJ and TOG models don't do nearly as well as some other Rolex offerings with regard to maintaining their value.

black face

I have owned both, as well as, a TT GMT. The older TOG's look smaller in the face than the newer versions (to me). If you are considering used watches, you might look at older TOG vs DJ. The difference is less pronounced.

If you're going with SS, I think TOG looks a bit sportier without being any bigger than a DJ. If you are interested in TT, I think the TT TOG with black face is as handsome a watch as you'll find. And, it's perfect for a sport watch or the office.

I bought a 116264 with oyster bracelet yesterday and I love it. I've Datejust too, but the black face with red bits on the TOG are beautiful. I am glad that I've had the opportunity to acquire a TOG.

Personally, I prefer the TOG. Like others, I think the red second hand adds something to the watch. While I am not enthralled with the look of the numbers on the bezel, overall, I would opt for the TOG.
