24 hours would be ideal battery life in my opinion. I can barely squeek out a day. It's such on pain to have to charge the battery multiple times a day. I hope the battery life gets better after some more charging cycles.

See above.

All independent tests show that the iPhone has as least as good or better battery life than the other leading PDA devices.

The issue here is the fact that you USE your iPhone, and you do nothing but text and email (at most) with other smart phones.

I can't go more than about 5 minutes without messing with mine.

I'm finding it better than my 3G.

Since it's the new toy, you're probably messing with it more than you normally would. I know I am!

That is very good IMO. I use my phone, texting, and email heavily starting at 7:00 AM, I am about out of juice by about 4:00 PM or so.

I've used mine fairly heavily today and I'm at 48%. Been at it since about 7:00.

That's what puzzled me. I really haven't use it that much and I'm afraid that if I start doing it, then I'll probably get a 12 hours on my battery.

How often is yours set to fetch data?
I don't have an S, but my 3g lasts a long time. I probably don't use it as much as you, but I am very happy with the battery life.

What is "FETCH DATA"?

You see I don't even know that this is, so I know I have not use the full capability of this phone. By the way, this my very first Iphone.

Settings -> Mail -> Fetch New Data

The more often you "Fetch," the more battery you use

You'll need to go through a couple of full charge cycles too. Once that happens, your battery should increase it's lifespan.

I use my phone so much (just got the new iphone today) that I barely make it through the day without hooking it up to a charger for at least a few moments.

I've read a few reviews of the 3gs (to help me decide whether to keep my 3g or upgrade). The battery is only a slight improvement from the previous model. Do you have the "ask wifi to join" set to "yes"? Turn that off.

With heavy use, I do not get 12 hours. 8 hours or so is what I get. Turning off Wi-Fi helps save the battery.

Yes, I have the WIFI turned off at all times on my 3G. I also have it set to "fetch" my E-Mails to manual (only when you open your in-box, etc. will it try to retrieve the mail). I find you get the best battery life going that route.
Congrats to everyone that has the new IPhone 3GS !!!

yup yup! i agree turn off all push and fetch and location services and your golden. my 2G with 3.0 software installed was lasting a little less then 20 hours with lots of talking....... when i had 2.2.1 i had 2 days on my 2G. the 3.0 software out of the box consumes a lot of battery.
