Sports documentaries and the Untold series

I love documentaries, and when you pair them with sports, I'm in heaven. We just wrapped up the Captain, and I have a newfound respect for Derek Jeter - a guy I used to love to hate. Highly recommend that one for even the casual sports fan and it's very similar to The Last Dance.

Even if you're not into sports though, I think the Untold series on Netflix is outstanding. Just watch last season's Malice at the Palace about the infamous Pacers / Pistons brawl with Ron Artest.

This year's subjects have been excellent thus far, with the Manti T'eo catfishing scandal, as well as the rise/fall of And 1 basketball. The background information has been great, and I'm really looking forward to the episode on referee Tim Donaghy's NBA betting debacle.

Anyone else watching these?

I don't care much about sports other than hockey but there was a channel called NHL Classics that played old games, had team and playoff documentaries, and on Utube you can find almost anything.

Popular these days are "the run to the Stanley Cup" that showcase various individual teams with insider stuff, players at home, insider dressing room screaming and garbage can kicking by the coaches and basically a full documentary of a few months or even a full season of just one team.

I guess the 'insider information' is the really goal of it all. The day in the life sort of thing.

All fun stuff to watch on a rainy afternoon.

The Manti one was solid. Hopefully they're all that good.

The Manti Teo doc was really good - time and hindsight really emphasize how badly he was judged/treated by everyone.

The best one - did you watch the Crimes & Penalties episode in the Untold series? About the minor league hockey team owned by a family allegedly connected to org crime? Hard to believe, but true

I really liked the And 1 episode as well. I was in high school when the hype train was really moving with the mixtapes and shoes, so it was interesting to see why they failed at the end.

Mr Blansky, have you ever seen the documentary, 'Red Army'?
I enjoyed that one a lot.

Love love love documentaries of all kinds. Favorite sports documentary was "The Last Dance" with the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls - 10 parts and shown during the lock down... great stuff.

i thought that was really well done, i'm a huge basketball fan so couldn't wait for that to come out. unrelated, but if you like that type of show there's a very similar one (not on hbo though) called "The Offer", which is about the making of the godfather movie. great cast and very well done overall imo

That one brought back all sorts of feels.

Pair that with the And 1 episode of Untold and I might just bust out my Air Pennies and work on my fade-aways.

I met David Harrison, who was on the Pacers and involved in that brawl, several times...really sad story.

I have watched all of them except for the Jeter series mainly bc i detest the Yankees or really just their fan base. Love NYC though! Been to 3 Yankees games and the fans are despicable, more rude and crude than any fan base in any sport. They boo and curse at everyone including their own players. Maybe I’m give it a shot tho...

I tried to watch the Jeter doc and could not stick with it. He’s just not very interesting to me. The Jordan one was awesome.

Agree on the Michael Jordan one as well. Not a basketball fan per se but it was interesting about a rather complex guy who HATED to lose.

Your post reminds me of this iconic Canadian band and the poetry of Gord Downie

Just finished the latest Untold on Tim Donaghy and his betting on NBA games while being a referee in the league; another solid doc and I would say a must watch for those that are familiar with his story.
