Icon20 New to Rolex. Is this Vintage legit?

Hello!

I'm new to Rolex and am looking at a vintage item. I've found one for sale listed as a 1967 Lady-DateJust in 18K gold, ref. 6701. It has a bark finish band but from what I've read this finish wasn't offered until the mid 1970's and only on certain models. The seller is saying that the year, ref number, and band finish makes it very rare.

Does this model, year, ref #, and finish correlate? Is this actually an original rare Rolex as advertised, or something that's been pieced together?

Thanks for any advice!

What would constitute as "overpaying"?

New to Rolex and vintage shouldn’t go together.

If its the one listed on Chrono best you walk away from that.
Bracelet is shot and will cost you dearly to have it fixed if at all possible.
These watches are not sought after and one in this condition is close to scrap value imho.

Although there is some truth in the views expressed above, and you need to be cautious when buying any vintage watch, the Rolex 6701 is a relatively rare variation of the ladies' Datejust and it can be a very attractive alternative to the usual fluted bezel design.

You still need to do a lot of research to make sure the watch is genuine and has the correct parts, but my experience is that ladies' watches offer less of a challenge than the men's sports watches as there are fewer altered, put together or replica ladies' watches around and so the chances of finding an unmolested one is higher.

A genuine 6701 will have a textured bezel with a pattern similar to the Morellis finish used on the man's model 1510 but with more of a hammered or pock marked look.

A variety of bracelets were fitted and you can find some watches on textured woven mesh bracelets as well as the more normal Jubilee and President bracelets.

Both of the latter have textured center links, the Jubilee having a pattern matching the Morellis type finish on the bezel, but the President bracelet having the center links with a pattern very similar to the later bark finish. The only 6701 textured President bracelets I have seen for sale recently have been made in South America and have the maker's mark DA stamped on the one of the clasp blades. These are very distinctive as the center links are completely hollow and the outer links appear to be a oval folded design where the center of the link has an hourglass shaped hole.

It would be best for the OP to post photos of the watch in question for further review, but I wouldn't be put off researching this further if the watch is attractive as there are some really unusual combinations of bezel and bracelet finishes around that, in my opinion, are a lot more elegant than the usual fluted bezel watch on a President bracelet.

Attached are some photos of different 6701 models that have been for sale over the years.
