Rolex Nicknames - Your Real Opinion?

Hulk, Batman, Bluesy, Pepsi, Coke, Starbucks, Batgirl…

I have considered asking you all this question for quite some time. To preface the subject, I would like to point out that the vast majority of us members are adult men. That isn’t a sexist statement, rather just fact.

That being said, we are probably all grown men in different phases of our adult lives. Coining nicknames isn’t unusual in our youth, most of us had one in our childhood, we also often have them for our children. But I’m having a tough time with these Rolex nicknames and it isn’t that I don’t use them or particularly dislike them. I just find it quite odd, based upon the aforementioned perceived demographic, that we men have created these nicknames for Rolex watches and perpetuate them between ourselves. We are continuing to invent them too. Starbucks and Batgirl being two very recent additions.

Of course, there’s the rationale or excuse that the nicknames are easier to say than the true reference. But, for instance, BLNR or BLRO are shorter acronyms than Batman or Pepsi. CHNR is shorter than Rootbeer.

I’ve then looked at other products or items we men buy. I can’t seem to find nicknames being attributed to cars, clothing items, shoes, nor even other brands of watches than Rolex. I could be wrong, mind?

As I’ve said, I use these nicknames occasionally or respond when they are mentioned. However, I’m intrigued as to what you all really think, I mean deep down.

Dislike. Especially when a celebrity name is attached. Or calling a modern Daytona a Panda, which is just incorrect.

Yes, panda is definitely a misnomer for the white dial.

BLRO, BLNR, and CHNR are “shorter” by number of letters, but are 2X the number of syllables to say. So the nicknames are quicker when speaking.

I like the nicknames, I mean, it’s all just us fetishizing jewelry after all — have some fun. Besides, the nicknames add to the overall “fame” or a particular reference.

The number of people who are triggered by a certain nickname for BLNR is always a joy whenever these threads arise.

I’m neutral.

I can respect the opinion that nicknames are ok, and also the opinion that nicknames are stupid.

I don’t like the opinion that certain nicknames are “ok” but “batgirl” is not ok.

I don't mind either. If someone chooses to use a nickname or not, who am I to lecture them on what to do?

So you like some nicknames and not others? I’d be great to get your opinion.

There is probably not a segment of the world that doesn't have nicknames for things.

I work in astrophysics and we use them to name things in deep space. They are being tidied up a bit as some older names are a bit insensitive these days.

Cars, aeroplanes, cities, sports teams..... the use of non literal names and nicknames for things is not some kind of deficit but a recognition that human brains cope better when using shortcuts.

I think this needs to be on a graph. Bluesy, Hulk--great. No Date simply descriptive. Starbucks, Batgirl, panda--yuck. And, with deepest respect to our UK compatriots, "Rollie"--NFW.

Outside of maybe the pepsi, as it’s been referred to as that forever, i think they are weird. It feels like a new collector thing. But i would imagine the reality is, it’s easier to remember a name like a hulk vs the reference number. Some people are not those type of Watch guys or gals, and they just want it to be simple. I understand it.

I’m alright, whatever works best.

I do feel stupid when I’m out and about and tell people I have a “one four oh six oh em”.

I think people in general just need to get less worked up over things.

Maybe childish but I have used them, especially with people who are not as into watches as I am… most casual watch enthusiasts who are not WIS level will use nicknames and I feel no need to be pretentious about it.

More so, I think it is childish for people to be triggered by the use of nicknames for what amounts to a hobby. There are levels to this and if a casual watch fan doesn’t want to memorize reference numbers I don’t blame them.

Mixed opinion for me. Coke and Pepsi make sense, the superhero ones aren't to my taste, and I have an abiding hatred of "bluesy".

I wouldn’t say there aren’t nicknames attributed to cars - off the top of my head, the old Porsche 911’s were often referred to as widowmakers, the “Bug” for VW Beetles, Batmobile for the old BMW CSL’s, Z3 M Coupe was often referred to as the Breadvan. I’m sure there are plenty others.

I guess in that context, I’m ok with the occasional nickname where it’s appropriate and fairly obvious. But giving everything a nickname for the sake of it is annoying.
