Movement Serial Numbers

How can you find out the movement serial number associated with a case serial number? And related if movement serial numbers are 6 digits that means there are only 1 million possible combos. Given that Rolex has made many millions of watches the serial numbers couldn't be unique? Or could they?

Rolex notes both numbers on the original build paperwork, but they don't provide that with the watch or publish it anywhere.

One alpha in a 6 digit string gives ~ 26 million permutations. Move it to another place in the string and you multiply that by 6, or about 156 million. If you randomize the string, and add in more than one alpha your number goes off the charts.

There is no way for YOU or US to tell if a watch was born with a particular movement.

Serial numbers would have to be unique or what's the point?

They vary. I just took a quick look at one of mine and it is a 7 digit number with a single number and space prefix: 3 85xxxxx. If you count the space, it is a 9 place serial.

if one were to change a movement they could get away with it if one cant match a watch SN to the movement.

But who would do that?
