Patek Model Numbers. HOW?
Hello,
I joined this community a few weeks ago after acquiring my first PP: 5227R. I see myself reading daily on this forum, about what others have and their passion for watches and I find myself looking up model numbers on google while I read about them on the forum. For instance, someone asks about the minute repeaters, and the comments are "I like 5078G or 6301P" etc etc. Or someone might be like "I acquired 5236P or 5373P" etc etc. How do you all keep up with the exact numbers of the model?? I am so confused I noticed some patterns in the model numbers. Easy ones to notice were that models start with 5 were from the men's collection, 7 was from the women's. J is Yellow, G is White, and R is rose gold. But apart from the obvious, how do you keep up with model numbers and memorize them? Does that knowledge just build up? or is there a method? Cheers |

You stare at them lustfully day after day, month after month. You'll remember.

That's pretty much it, actually. When I joined I just knew Nautilus and Aquanat, but as I looked through the line and started purchases, the number knowledge slowly set in... 5711, 5168, 5205, etc.

Build a spreadsheet and you’ll learn them soon enough.

Builds up over time as the obsession takes hold. BTW, what are you eyeing for your next Patek? 5205g, 5167 . . . .?

We have Forum Teams calls and quiz each other with flash cards :D
Haha, some of us have been at the watch collecting game for many years or decades, so that all spare time spent reading about these references over and over again. It just becomes second nature eventually. Shouldn't take too long though :)

I keep a site like Chrono24 open on an adjacent tab and when a reference number I'm not familiar with is mentioned in a thread I quick click on it and see the photos.

For me the journey started with vintage references. Watching talking watches throughout the years and listening to the likes of: JCB, John goldberger, William massena, Jason Singer, John Mayer. I picked up the legendary vintage references like: 96, 1518, 2499, 3445, 565, 570, 1463, 1491, 3970, 5970 etc
I believe John Singer episode was very informative about some vintage references and the differences between them. After that you can move into new-vintage and new models Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

As your interest rises, learning the numbers is the easiest part.

I think the best number to remember when drooling over watches is the amount of disposable cash in your financial armoury which you do not expect to see an investment income/return from and won’t need back.
You may get lucky with one model or another but watches are essentially jewellery with a residual value depending upon rarity, fashion and availability. |
