Identify vintage Rolex

Hi everyone,

I've been passed down a Rolex from my grandfather and would appreciate everyone's help on pinpointing the ref #, year, etc. for the watch. I've posted pictures of the watch on Reddit and several people have confirmed that it's authentic. If anyone thinks that it's not authentic, please feel free to chime in as well.

That said, I would love to learn more about its history and I know this forum definitely has serious enthusiasts on Rolex's history and their watches. It seems to be a 1950s Oyster Perpetual with a waffle dial and possibly a ref # 6284, but I know nothing more beyond that. The bracelet has 783519 and 357 stamped on it, if that helps.

If you are serious about getting an informed opinion from the good folks on TRF, then post the photos here.

Otherwise, you’ll have to trust the Reddit posts.

I usually welcome newcomers but I’m really not sure of your intentions with this approach - not a rant just honest.

Numbers to help identify your watch are on the sides of the case under the bracelet end links and inside the case back.

Shouldn't be a mystery.

My bad everyone, yes that is the Reddit post. I'm not sure why the pictures didn't upload. As my username indicates, I'm completely new to not just watches but this website as well.

Please remove the bracelet and inspect the engravings between the lugs. Sometimes they can be a bit worn or corroded, but you should be able to read the reference number on one side and the serial number on the other.

Appreciate the response - I did that and it looks like both the reference and serial numbers are scratched off due to the bracelet's end links. I can see a clear outline of the scratch caused by the end link between the lugs.

Is there any other way to pinpoint the reference and serial numbers?

Not the serial number, but the reference number and year may be inside the case-back.

Sometimes if you look carefully with a loupe you can make out numbers that you think have been obscured. I once bought a watch from someone who said that the serial number was totally scratched off, but when I looked carefully under magnification in good lighting, I could read all of them.
