Surstromming: an acquired taste apparently

Any TRF members ever try eating this Swedish treat? I just spent an half hour watching YouTube videos of people trying to eat the fermented canned fish. Most gave up upon opening the can. I laughed until my sides hurt.

I thought the lutefisk my old relatives used to prepared for the holidays was awful, but surstromming appears to make lutefisk taste like candy. (As children, we would hide in the basement or outside in the cold to escape the smell of the lutefisk.)

I'm from Sweden originally so I have been exposed to it. Honestly I have not been physically able to try it. The smell is just completely crazy and it has just been impossible to overcome. The odor can probably fill an entire Costco store, seriously, if you open a can.

I believe most people eat it outdoors.

I am in Stockholm at this very moment. Yet I think this will be a hard pass.

Why...just, why?

I worked in Stavanger in the late 60's. I experienced that pungent odour, on a couple of occasions....never again!!

I tried Lutefisk many years ago because I was told that per Norwegian culture it was extremely disrespectful to the host if I didn’t eat it, it was a seasonal tradition of the utmost importance. After I ate it, the others laughed and tossed theirs uneaten in the garbage, they were all quite entertained. It was effing horrible. I’ve never smelled or tasted surstromming but I’ve heard all the stories about it. No way.

I’ve eaten cat food (accidentally) I’m so keen to give it a go.

My father-in-law is from Norway and he’s talked about Lutefisk. Never tried it, and based on what I know about it and seeing some of the stuff he eats, I never will.

in Korea, there's a similarly polarizing dish called "hong-uh" which is fermented stingray.

I've enjoyed it maybe... 34.49585% of the times I've tried it.

link to article about it

Surstromming: an acquired taste apparently

Major airlines like British Airways and Air France argue the Surströmming cans are pressurised goods, and must be classified as potentially explosive. The dish is no longer allowed on their flights …

Funny thing is I didn't know until the following day when there where broken biscuits and a near empty cat food tin on the kitchen bench.

One to many margaritas.

I don't mind it as long as it's opened outside. It's quite nice on smørrebrød.
But then we Dutch also have a liking for fermented salty herring, as it was the only way to preserve them for long enough.

I’m sorry, but any meat that you have to open outside because of the smell shouldn’t be eaten.
