5970p or Grand Lange 1 Lumen for the future collection?

I'm starting to ponder my collection and where I want to go post Rolex (besides my one temporary foray into Datograph territory) and am contemplating two watches for the future.

I know the ideal scenario is why choose / choose both, but curious which of these people think is more appealing and why. I have not seen either in the flesh unfortunately.

The Patek 5970p or Grand Lange 1 Lumen?

Not even close, 5970P is a beauty.

Grande Lange 1 Lumen and Lumen moonphase both make no sense. The point of a Lumen is to bring something extra by using the special UV glass dial to charge up the Lume, in this case the moonphase moves so slowly it never needs charging through the glass. ZW Lumen and Dato Lumen make sense since one is constantly changing time and the other allows you to use the chrono in the dark. Of course, it looks cool which might be enough.

Grand lange makes no sense as it’s simply too big and not a timeless size. For that reason alone - Patek.

The answer between almost anything and 5970P is 5970P. There’s a few journes I’d prefer but not many watches beat the 5970P.

I love the 5970.

The lumen watches look like dumb toys to me with all that lume. It is not luxury. It is not fine traditional watchmaking. Perhaps that's the point (departure from tradition) but they look silly.

Both excellent, but 5970 in a different (higher) league.

Easiest choice I’d ever have to make in my life, watch-related or not: 5970.

Isn't the 5970p close to triple the price?

5970p or Grand Lange 1 Lumen for the future collection?

Well I feel crazy after the unanimous vote but I’d much rather wear the lumen. That and the zeit lum are some of the cooler watches I can name. Really wouldn’t even think twice about this one- also there’s about $200k In leftover dough with the Lange to go get a nice new car. Kinda hard to ignore that..
(For whatever it’s worth I just got a 5270 and have a grand Lange 1.. I know neither are the watches in question but a pic never hurt anyone)

I'm not a fan of black dialed watches (except black enamel ones) but I will still choose the 5970P notwithstanding the huge gulf in their secondary prices. Platinum Patek PCC are special.

How is this even a comparison? The 5970p is an all-time great watch

I don't think this is a fair comparison. The 5970P is a perpetual calendar chronograph in platinum.

The Lumen is a take on a time only Lange 1 with lots of lume.

Now compare perpetual chrono to perpetual chrono, and I think it's a fairer fight.

But still....

I'm a huge Lange fan. Owning a Lange is my ultimate grail.

That said.

5970P. It's that special.

I'm another in the minority, but of the two, I'd prefer the Lange Lumen. It gives a bit of sportiness to it's already unique character. Additionally, I'm just not a big fan of a chrono in a dress watch, so it's just not a good comparison for me.

Dont get me wrong, the Patek is an amazing watch, but that's what makes the hobby fun: differing opinions & tastes.

Aesthetically, I agree with you. The Lumen is unique in many ways, while the Patek in its Grand Complication form, you can find elements in other watches of equal complication. The layout of the Patek is also "traditional" in many respects. Whereas the Lumen is, in my opinion, very unique and pleasing to me. One thing you can say about Lange is that they are not afraid to take chances, while Patek has more invested in their past traditions.

That being said, if you are a first time collector of high-end pieces, I think you go Patek here first. Then think about something in the Lumen series.

I would go Lange. You can always find a Patek but the Lumen is very rare. Lange 5000-6000 pieces a year and Patek 20,000+ a year…plus I think that particular Lumen is super cool. Dato Lumen would be my 1st choice. Can’t go wrong with either…just my $0.02…
